NFL KICKS OFF FIRST PRO SPORTS LEAGUE WEBCAST OF GAMES
Broadband Internet Subscribers in The Netherlands, Austria and Singapore
First to View NFL Games on Their Personal Computers
The NFL, the sports leader in new technology, is taking its games well into the 21st century. This season, the NFL will test the first international webcast of professional sports league games, beginning Sunday, Sept. 26. The high-speed Broadband Internet telecasts will be available only in The Netherlands, Austria and Singapore in both real time and through Video on Demand (VOD, games are available when viewer wants them) and Near Video on Demand (NVOD-games are rebroadcast at select times).
The NFL games will be offered in The Netherlands and Austria to subscribers of chello broadband n.v., Europe's first and leading Broadband Internet service provider and an operating company of United Pan-Europe Communications N.V. (UPC) (NASDAQ: UPCOY, AMEX: UPC). UPC is a consolidated subsidiary of Denver-based United Global Com Inc. ("United"), (NASDAQ: "UCOMA"). Microsoft has an interest of approximately 7.8% in UPC.
In Singapore, the NFL is working with SingTel Magix, a multimedia service provided by Singapore Telecommunications Ltd. It delivers Broadband content to subscribers via ADSL (high-speed) telephone lines.
The first games to be webcast in The Netherlands and Austria are Cleveland at Baltimore and Minnesota at Green Bay. In Singapore, fans will receive Denver at Tampa Bay and Minnesota at Green Bay.
"The NFL has always been on the forefront of new technology and innovative ways to reach fans," said Tola Murphy-Baran, senior vice-president of market development of NFL Enterprises, the new media and technology division of the NFL. "We are excited about our pioneering role in an emerging entertainment medium. The NFL played a key role in making the U.S. direct-to-home satellite TV industry a viable and competitive entertainment medium with the 1994 introduction of NFL SUNDAY TICKET, the out-of-market subscription TV package. In the same way, we hope to accelerate Broadband-enabled Internet services. The power of NFL programming will help drive the deployment of Broadband and better serve our fans abroad."
The NFL will deliver backhaul feeds of CBS and FOX Sunday afternoon games to its international Broadband partners via satellite directly from the stadiums. In The Netherlands and Austria, chello will deliver one live game via cable modem to their Broadband subscribers' personal computers on Sunday evenings, plus two other games for later broadcast in NVOD. The NFL webcasts will use chello's new technology, ClearBand, which captures, encodes and broadcasts full-screen, TV quality images in real time. Live and NVOD games will be offered to chello subscribers free of charge during the first half of the NFL season, a period in which extensive research will be conducted to evaluate user response to viewing NFL games via this new medium. NFL and chello plan to introduce a pay-per-view model for games during the second half of the season.
The NFL will send two games each Sunday to Singapore via satellite, one at 1 p.m. and one at 4 p.m. ET. Magix, the multimedia service that offers Internet access, VOD, news, games and a suite of other interactive bandwidth-intensive applications via the Singapore-One network, will encode and archive the games for VOD starting on Tuesday afternoons. Magix subscribers will have access to games at no charge this season.
In all three countries, viewers will also be able to watch the game and simultaneously download information about players, rules or stats from the NFL's website, NFL.com.
In addition, subscribers will receive free additional non-game educational and entertaining programming from Emmy Award-winning NFL Films. This programming will include: "NFL Week in Review," a weekly 30-minute program which recaps every game and previews upcoming games; "A Beginner's Guide to American Football," a 30-minute introduction to the rules and basics of the game; "NFL Bloopers;" "Super Bowl Moments," a series of one-minute capsules of the most memorable and historic Super Bowl action, and "Play Football Vignettes," a series of 30-second videos explaining the basics of the game.
The NFL is the only league to offer each of its in-market games on free-over-the-air TV and has garnered unparalleled ratings over the past four decades. It was the pioneer in sports marketing and licensing with the creation of NFL Properties in 1963, decades before the other leagues began coordinated marketing efforts. The NFL's new media arm, NFL Enterprises, is also the sports leader in enhancing fans' enjoyment of the NFL with cutting-edge technology. In 1994, the NFL launched the first satellite sports subscription package, NFL SUNDAY TICKET. In 1995, the NFL was the first league on the Internet with NFL.com, one of the most heavily visited websites.
