NEW YORK, September 8 -- The National Football League and Kmart will team this fall to provide families with a free NFL Gameday experience during the 1997 Kmart NFL Family Days program. Approximately 900 girls and boys ages eight to 15, in seven NFL cities, will visit their local NFL team and participate in non-contact football skills clinics, stadium tours and autograph sessions with NFL players.
The program will take place in Jacksonville, September 13; Dallas, September 20; Washington, September 20; Carolina, October 4; Oakland, October 11; New York (Jets), October 25; and Detroit, November 15.
"NFL Family Days offer families a fun and interactive environment where they can experience football and meet some of their favorite sports heroes," said Jim Connelly, senior vice president, consumer products for NFL Properties. "With the help of Kmart, we hope to provide similar opportunities to families in every NFL city."
Each clinic will be divided into morning (9 a.m.-noon) and afternoon (1-4 p.m.) sessions. After a brief introduction, children will rotate between skills clinics on the main field, where they will receive instruction from coaches and NFL players. Children will be joined by their family members for tours of the locker room -- where they will learn about pre-game preparation; the press box; the radio broadcast booth; and the video room -- where they will learn about editing/game film preparation. Family members will also participate in on-field activities.
"Kmart is proud to offer children and their families a program that will create lifelong memories," said Larry Davis, vice president of advertising for Kmart. "We want young fans to be part of a fun and educational environment that brings them closer to the game they love."
Children signed up to participate in the Family Days program at their local Kmart stores. Kmart, the exclusive retailer for the program, and the NFL will provide children with free T-shirts and hats featuring the Family Days logo -- the Kmart logo and the name of the local NFL team.
Kmart NFL Family Days was launched in 1996 in Detroit, and is part of the NFLs multi-faceted "Play Football" initiative to provide exciting ways for even more children to play, watch and experience the game of football. Other "Play Football" programs include NFL Flag, presented by Nike; NFL C.I.T.Y. (Challenge and Inspire Todays Youth) Football; NFL Gatorade Punt, Pass & Kick; and Starter NFL Youth Training Camps.
