JEFF GARCÍA’S COMMITMENT ON THE FIELD Every time San Francisco 49ers quarterback JEFF GARCÍA passes or runs for a touchdown at 3Com Park, the 49ers’ stadium, Hispanic college students win. García ended last season as the third-ranked passer in the NFL and threw 32 touchdown passes that not only helped the 49ers, but also helped students. What makes each García touchdown so rewarding is that for the second year in a row, Anheuser-Busch Companies will match each touchdown with a $500 contribution to the HISPANIC SCHOLARSHIP FUND, the nation’s leading Hispanic educational organization. García, a Mexican-American whose paternal grandparents are natives of San Juan de Los Lagos in Jalisco, Mexico, is an active supporter of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund. “It’s great to be part of such an innovative program,” García says of the program. “It is very rewarding knowing that my success on the field can translate into a direct impact for Hispanic students pursuing their education.” Last year, Anheuser-Busch donated $8,500 to the HSF through the touchdown promotion. García’s support of the fund continues through the offseason. Next May will be the third time that García hosts the annual Hispanic Scholarship Fund-Jeff García Golf Classic. Last May, the event raised more than $75,000 in scholarship funds for 31 Bay Area Latino students. In addition to the golf tournament and touchdown effort, García has participated with his father in an HSF poster campaign and has spoken at a HSF Town Hall Meeting, where he had the opportunity to talk to Hispanic students and their parents about the importance of a college education. “I am very proud of my Latino heritage,” says García, who grew up in Gilroy, California. “I want to be someone who can represent Latinos on a public scale.” The Hispanic Scholarship Fund was founded in 1975 based on a vision to strengthen the country by advancing college education among Hispanic Americans, the fastest-growing segment of the U.S. population. Today, HSF provides more college scholarships to the Latino community than any other organization. |
