TV COVERAGE SPANS THE GLOBE:
RECORD 226 COUNTRIES & TERRITORIES TO TELEVISE NFL ACTION
WITH 71,890 HOURS OF PROGRAMMING
As the popularity of
American football around the world continues to grow, a record 226
countries and territories in virtually every corner of the globe will
receive NFL programming – approximately 71,890 hours’ worth – during the
2002 season.
NFL programming will
stretch across 24 time zones and be broadcast in 32 languages. Coverage
begins with “NFL Kickoff Live from Times Square” on September 5, a football
and music festival featuring BON JOVI that will be beamed around the
world by the NFL’s 68 international media partners, including Japan’s NHK
and NTV as well as Mexico’s TELEVISA.
The NFL’s
international media partners will not only be airing games this season, but
they also will carry NFL Films-produced magazine programs and archive
footage, and NFL entertainment specials.
NTV will again produce
its popular magazine-style show, Club-T. NTV is the only broadcaster
in the world that produces 52 original programs per year entirely dedicated
to the NFL. More than 2,000,000 Japanese NFL fans tune in to Club-T
each week.
This season, the NFL will
have 16 partner-produced programs – more than ever before – including new
shows on SBS6 in the Netherlands and SBS in Australia, both
free channels.
“Our programming is
designed to educate and entertain fans outside the United States,” says
DOUG QUINN, NFL International Senior Vice President and Managing
Director. “Content will be available to satisfy the hard-core fans, as well
as those exposed to the game for the first time. Through our broadcast
partners worldwide, millions of fans will experience NFL football this
season.”
Members of the United
States military also will have a chance to follow their favorite teams.
More than 800,000 servicemen and -women in 165 countries, including
approximately 100,000 sailors and Marines onboard U.S. Navy ships, will
receive NFL programming.
"The American Armed Forces Radio and
Television Service (AFRTS) graciously thank the National Football League for
again providing us with game coverage from the 2002 season," says United
States Air Force Lieutenant Colonel ROBERTO GARZA, Commander of the
AFRTS Broadcast Center.
"It is particularly special to our deployed
men and women as they tackle the mission of defending our country against
terrorism, provide humanitarian support to those in need, and continue their
daily task of defending our way of life. The NFL on AFRTS is great for
maintaining the morale and well-being of our soldiers, sailors, airmen and
Marines stationed overseas in harm's way."
