MERTON HANKS RETURNS TO NFL AS
SENIOR MANAGER OF CONSUMER PRODUCTS AND COMPLIANCE

Merton Hanks, the four-time Pro Bowl defensive back of the San Francisco 49ers, has been named Senior Manager of Consumer Products and Compliance, the NFL announced today.

In his new role, Hanks will work with the Consumer Products and Football Operations departments at NFL headquarters in New York.

Hanks will serve as a liaison between the 32 NFL clubs and the NFL office, working closely with equipment managers, coaches and licensees on the NFL’s practice and game-day apparel programs.  He will supervise the on-field uniform inspection and enforcement program.

Hanks also will assist Director of Football Development Gene Washington on the NFL’s College Relations and College Campus Visitation programs.  In this role, Hanks will speak to college football teams about NFL and life-skills issues.

The 35-year-old Hanks graduated from the University of Iowa.  He played with the 49ers from 1991 to 1998 and with the Seattle Seahawks in 1999.  An NFC Pro Bowl All-Star from 1994 through 1997, Hanks started at free safety for the 49ers’ Super Bowl XXIX Championship team.

Hanks retired after the 1999 season.  Since, he has worked as a television football analyst and has interests in a variety of real estate and venture capital businesses, including Champion Ventures with former teammates Joe Montana, Ronnie Lott and Harris Barton.
