The Ultimate Fantasy Draft!

For most of the 221 members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, fantasy football did not exist during their heyday. Which means that fantasy enthusiasts have never had the thrill of drafting the likes to Jim Brown or Johnny Unitas or Don Hutson.

Who would you take if you had the first pick in a fantasy draft in which you could choose from among the sport’s greatest players of all time? While we’re at it, who would you take with the second, third and fourth picks?

Profootballhof.com decided to hold a fantasy draft – the Ultimate Fantasy Draft – and we recruited four of the nation’s preeminent football writers to take part.

We chose four writers who are uniquely qualified to judge the talent. Three of them are members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee: John Clayton of ESPN, Jarrett Bell of USA Today, and Paul Zimmerman of Sports Illustrated. The fourth, NFL.com national editor Vic Carucci, is a former member of the committee.

Here are the ground rules: We held a 12-round draft in which our selectors chose a “representative” team – one player from each of 12 positions. The “ultimate foundation” upon which to build a team.

The entire pool of Hall of Famers was available, and each selector was allowed one “wild card” – a player who, for whatever reason, is not yet in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

There’s no disputing that all four teams are awesome. They are, after all, Hall of Fame-calibre. Check out how the draft panned out, and decide which team you think is the best. You’ll be able to cast our vote for one of these teams in the weeks to come, as we present the “Ultimate Playoff” – stay tuned!
