VP OF FOOTBALL OPERATIONS BEAKE TO RETIRE;
SHELL TO TAKE ON EXPANDED RESPONSIBILITIES

JOHN BEAKE, longtime Denver Broncos general manager and NFL vice president of football operations since 2002, has announced his retirement, the league said today.

The NFL also announced that Pro Football Hall of Famer ART SHELL will join the league on a fulltime basis to take on expanded responsibilities for various football activities.

Beake will continue to focus as a consultant on the football operations of the NFL Europe League through its 2004 season.  He also will supervise the expanded NFL Coaches Symposium, which he has helped develop.  The symposium takes place on May 10-13 in Orlando.

Commissioner PAUL TAGLIABUE said that all aspects of football operations in the NFL office will be reviewed, with a new head of that group to be appointed in the next few months.

“John Beake has had three decades of rich and varied service with NFL teams and the league,” said Tagliabue.  “He has been a strong advocate on many subjects, including player development, and a consummate professional.”

Beake has spent 44 years as a coach or administrator in high school, college and professional football.

As an assistant coach for the Kansas City Chiefs from 1968-74, he was the offensive backfield coach for the club when it defeated the Minnesota Vikings to win Super Bowl IV.  He also coached running backs for the New Orleans Saints in 1976-77.

Immediately before joining the NFL office in 2000, Beake was vice president of administration for the Broncos for two years after serving as the team’s general manager for 14 years.

Shell, the former Los Angeles Raiders head coach (1989-94) and tackle for the Raiders from 1968-82, was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1989.  He has handled certain college relations matters and player disciplinary appeals for on-field violations of NFL playing rules on a seasonal basis since 2002.  His full-time role will include additional duties.
