SATELLITE ADVISORY

Cardinals Raise Roof on New Stadium

Footage from this weekend’s roof lift at the new Arizona Cardinals Stadium will be available via satellite this Sunday (Feb. 20) from 4:30-5:00 p.m. M.S.T. (6:30-7:00 p.m. E.S.T.).

This weekend, the 5,500-ton center portion of the roof will be lifted to the top of the stadium 156 feet above the ground in what will be the heaviest roof lift ever in North America. Raising the 11-million pound steel roof section is like lifting 14 Boeing 747 airplanes or approximately 34,000 NFL linemen. It is a three-to-four day process but the majority of lifting is scheduled for Saturday. The roof is raised via a strand-jack lifting system that has the capacity to lift the Eiffel Tower.

Construction is more than halfway completed on the stadium, which will feature a retractable roof as well as a completely retractable natural grass playing surface, the first of its kind in North America. It is on schedule to open in time for the 2006 season and will not only be the home of the Arizona Cardinals and the Fiesta Bowl but the stadium will also host the Super Bowl in February of 2008.

The feed will contain video footage from the event as well as interviews with key individuals involved. It will also include time-lapse video footage that shows the roof lift from start to finish.
