CHARLEY CASSERLY NAMED TO COMPETITION COMMITTEE
Washington Redskins General Manager CHARLEY CASSERLY has been appointed to the NFL Competition Committee, Commissioner PAUL TAGLIABUE announced today.
Casserly replaces former Indianapolis Colts Vice President BILL TOBIN as a member of the committee which studies all aspects of the game and recommends rules and policy changes to the NFL clubs.
Last Friday, Commissioner Tagliabue named Tampa Bay Buccaneers General Manager RICH MC KAY co-chairman of the Competition Committee. Green Bay Packers head coach MIKE HOLMGREN is the other co-chair.
McKay replaces GEORGE YOUNG, the former New York Giants general manager who was recently appointed NFL senior vice president of football operations.
The other members of the committee are MIKE BROWN of the Cincinnati Bengals, BILL COWHER of the Pittsburgh Steelers, DENNIS GREEN of the Minnesota Vikings, and BILL POLIAN of the Indianapolis Colts.
"Charley Casserly has been involved in football operations with the Redskins for more than 20 years," said Commissioner Tagliabue. "In serving as a scout, administrator and general manager, Charley has developed a thorough understanding of the game that will serve the committee well."
Breaking into the NFL in 1977 as an unpaid intern for then-Redskins head coach GEORGE ALLEN, Casserly rose through the ranks during the next two decades to become the teams general manager. He was named to that position in 1989 and in that post has guided Washington to three playoff appearances and a Super Bowl XXVI victory.
