TWO OF NFL’S BEST HELP FIGHT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

The month of October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month – an issue about which two NFL players are deeply concerned -- WILL SHIELDS of the KANSAS CITY CHIEFS and HERMAN MOORE of the DETROIT LIONS.

Moore, the Lions’ outstanding wide receiver, has become involved in the fight against domestic violence.

Since its inception, Moore and his wife ANGELA have been honorary co-chairpersons of the "Docs and Jocks Run Against Domestic Violence." The fourth-annual race and the associated "Around the ‘Dome Walk," (a 1.5-mile walk around the Pontiac Silverdome) were held on October 3. Proceeds benefited Detroit Lions Charities programs that help in the fight against domestic violence.

Both Moore and his wife were track stars at the University of Virginia. They believe the race is a good opportunity to promote healthy living and bring attention to domestic violence.

In Kansas City, Shields, a three-time Pro Bowl offensive guard organized the Will To Succeed Foundation in 1993 with his wife SENIA. The foundation was developed to improve the lives of abused, battered and neglected women and children.

Will To Succeed provides educational tools and nurturing experiences to inner-city women and children who lack such resources. The foundation also offers opportunities for neglected and abused women to further their education and gain self-esteem. Through its programs, the foundation helps women break the cycle of abuse.

Will To Succeed runs many programs in the Kansas City area. Its "Team Esteem" initiative rewards students who write creatively and have improved their essay writing. As their reward, the students receive the opportunity to attend a Chiefs game.

The foundation’s "Day of Beauty" program is run for battered women living in shelters in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Sixty-eight (Shields’ uniform number) women are taken by bus to a beauty salon where they receive haircuts, manicures, and makeovers. Babysitting services are also provided for the women so they can enjoy an evening at a restaurant with Shields and his wife.

Along with these programs, the Will To Succeed Foundation runs a football camp and donates money to local charities in the Kansas City area.
