Neil Austrian, the NFLs President and Chief Operating Officer since 1991, has resigned to pursue other business opportunities, the NFL announced today. Austrians resignation is effective at the end of 1999.
"This has been a job that has been fun and rewarding," said Austrian. "As I reflect back on the last nine years, an enormous amount has been accomplished, and I am proud to have played a part in that growth. With our television contracts going through the 2005 season and our labor agreements in place for at least four more years, the timing of my departure works well for the League and for me personally."
Commissioner Paul Tagliabue said: "Neil Austrian has made outstanding contributions to the strength and growth of the League in television, finance, marketing, international and many other areas. While I appreciate Neils desire to pursue new challenges, his leadership, extensive media experience and business talents will be very difficult to replace. We will miss him as a colleague and friend and wish him great success as he pursues new challenges."
No replacement as president will be named, said Tagliabue. All business units now will report directly to the Commissioner.
"Neils departure will give the next generation of League executives the opportunity to assume broader roles in serving the Leagues member clubs and their many business partners," said Commissioner Tagliabue.
