CLOSE, HIGH-SCORING GAMES HIGHLIGHT KICKOFF WEEKEND

The NFL’s Kickoff ’99 Weekend Sunday was packed with close, high-scoring games.

The eight games decided by seven points or less on Sunday were the most on an opening-day Sunday in the 1990s. The previous record for the decade was seven games in 1995.

Sunday’s total was the most on an opening Sunday since 1985 when there were also eight games decided by seven points or less. The last time there were more than eight games decided by seven points or less on an opening Sunday was in 1979, when there were nine.

Five games were decided by three points or less, just one shy of the 1990s record set in 1995 when there were six games decided by three points or less.

The 14 games played yesterday totaled 650 points scored, the most for an opening Sunday in the ’90s. With three points in tonight’s Denver-Miami game, the weekend will surpass 1994 (652) for most points scored in an opening weekend in the decade.

In addition, there were two 21-point comebacks yesterday. The Arizona Cardinals trailed the Philadelphia Eagles 21-0 and came back to win 25-24, and the Dallas Cowboys trailed the Washington Redskins 35-14 but prevailed in overtime 41-35.

The last time there were two 21-point comebacks on the same day was September 23, 1979 when the Houston Oilers came back to defeat the Cincinnati Bengals 30-27 in overtime and the Denver Broncos rallied to beat the Seattle Seahawks 37-34.
