2001 OPPONENTS DETERMINED

The opponents for all regular-season NFL games in 2001 have been determined and a complete list of each team’s matchups was issued today by the NFL.

The official schedule, with playing dates and times, will be announced in the spring.

The 2001 regular season will begin with NFL Kickoff 2001 Weekend on September 9-10, and conclude on December 31.

Wild Card Playoff Weekend will be Saturday and Sunday, January 5-6; Divisional Playoff games on the weekend of January 12-13; and the AFC and NFC Championship Games on Sunday, January 20.

Super Bowl XXXVI at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana will be played on Sunday, January 27.

The Pro Bowl in Honolulu, Hawaii, featuring the AFC and NFC All-Stars, is set for Sunday, February 3.

In 2001, each team will play eight home-and-home games with the other teams in its division, except for

teams in the six-team AFC Central, which will each have 10 divisional games.

Each team in all divisions except the AFC Central will play four non-division conference opponents. Teams that finished first and second in the AFC Central in 2000 will play two non-division conference opponents, and AFC Central teams that finished third, fourth, fifth and sixth will each play three non-division conference opponents.

Each team in all divisions except the AFC Central will play four games against teams of a division of the other conference. Teams that finished first and second in the AFC Central in 2000 will play four games against teams of a division in the other conference, and AFC Central teams that finished third, fourth, fifth and sixth will play three games against teams of a division of the other conference.

Interconference games next season will match the AFC East against the NFC West, the AFC Central against the NFC Central, and the AFC West against the NFC East.

The 2001 season will be the final one under this scheduling formula. In 2002, the Houston Texans will take the field as the NFL’s 32nd team, the league will realign into eight four-team divisions, and a new scheduling formula will take effect.
