Paid attendance for all NFL games increased in 1999 for the third year in a row and was the highest ever in the 80-year history of the league, the NFL announced today.
Helped by the return last year of the Cleveland Browns, NFL paid attendance for all games played in 1999 of 20,762,730 rose by more than 1,000,000 (1,021,237) over the previous record total of 19,741,493 in 1998. It marked the first time in league history that the 20-million paid attendance mark was reached.
It was also the first time that all NFL games averaged 64,000 fans (64,083). The 1999 NFL regular-season total paid attendance of 16,206,640 for an average of 65,349 per game was also an all-time record. It was the first time the NFL averaged 65,000 fans per game in the regular season.
A total of 3,762,331 tickets were sold for 64 preseason games for an average of 58,786. Twelve postseason games produced a sale of 793,759 tickets, including 72,625 for Super Bowl XXXIV.
The Kansas City Chiefs led the NFL in regular-season home paid attendance for the sixth consecutive year with a total of 629,569 for eight games. Three other teams topped the 600,000 paid total at home: Washington (628,535), New York Jets
(624,847), and New York Giants (623,952).Seven teams drew more than 1.1 million paid attendance home and away during the regular season, led by Washington (1,168,460). The others were: New York Jets (1,144,546), New York Giants (1,139,653), Kansas City (1,134,490), Miami (1,130,966), Denver (1,128,353), and Buffalo (1,102,912).
