DOLPHINS TO HOLD PUBLIC TRIBUTE FOR DAN MARINO ON AUGUST 23
MIAMI The Miami Dolphins will hold a public tribute for former quarterback Dan Marino on Wednesday, August 23, starting at 7:30 p.m. at Pro Player Stadium, the club announced today. This celebration of Marinos 17-year Dolphins career will feature a performance by Hootie & the Blowfish, as well as special guest appearances by many of Marinos other friends in athletics and entertainment, which will be announced shortly. In addition, there will be a special tribute video highlighting Marinos career as well as a gala fireworks display to conclude the festivities.
"We wanted to allow the public to honor Dan, and felt this tribute was an appropriate way to do so," said Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga. "Were bringing together people who have been close to Dan, both in and out of football, and we certainly wanted the South Florida community to be an integral part of the celebration."
In addition to honoring Dan, we also felt it would be fitting to help Dans charitable efforts at the same time," said Dolphins President Eddie Jones. "Since 100 percent of the proceeds from this event will be donated to the Marino Foundation, the many worthwhile causes that Dan supports will benefit from this tribute long after it ends."
"I have followed Dan for all 17 years of his NFL career," said Darius Rucker, lead singer for Hootie & the Blowfish. "I am honored to have the opportunity to participate in such a tremendous event and help Dan out in any way I can. I have had the good fortune of getting to know Dan extremely well since I first met him in 1995, and I know how much he has done for South Florida both on the field as a member of the Dolphins, and for the community through his many charitable activities."
