AENEAS WILLIAMS FUMBLE RETURN REVIEWED AND
CHANGED TO RECORD-TYING 104 YARDS

Following a detailed review of the videotape of Sunday’s game, the NFL has determined that the fumble return for a touchdown by Aeneas Williams of the Arizona Cardinals against the Washington Redskins was a record-tying 104 yards.

The play originally was scored by the Cardinals’ stat crew as a 103-yard return, one yard short of the NFL record for a fumble return set 28 years ago by Oakland’s Jack Tatum against Green Bay on September 24, 1972.

"We looked at it very carefully with the league office and everyone agreed that it was clearly a 104-yard return," said Seymour Siwoff of Elias Sports Bureau, the NFL’s chief statistician. "It is not unusual for us to review and change the official scoring of plays in consultation with the league office and clubs. Our goal is to make sure we are correct."
