Chargers hope Throwback uniforms spark victory; fans can take jerseys, helmets home
In honor of the Chargers 40th Anniversary Season in San Diego, the team will don their Throwback uniforms when they play the Oakland Raiders on Sunday night, Oct. 29 in the nationally televised ESPN Sunday Night game. These uniforms were originally worn in the early 1960s and again during the NFLs 75th Anniversary season in 1994.
This special opportunity was made possible when the Chargers sought and received permission from the National Football League to wear their unique Throwback Blue uniforms in San Diego for one game this year. The Chargers season ticket holders were given the opportunity to select which game the team would wear these uniforms and they, by vote, chose the Chargers-Raiders matchup.
In an exciting opportunity for Chargers fans nationwide, the Chargers are donating the actual game-worn Throwback blue jerseys and helmets from this weeks game to the Huntington's Disease Society of America ("HDSA") who is making them available to fans in A Ticket to Cure HD, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity drawing.
"We were excited when the League approved us to wear the Throwback blue uniforms for a game this year," said Chargers President Dean Spanos. "Its a fitting way to celebrate our 40th Anniversary in San Diego and honor part of our history.
"Now it feels just as good to know that were able to take it a step further and put the actual game jerseys and helmets in the hands of our fans. And, at the same time, do something to help the thousands of people in San Diego who are directly affected by Huntingtons Disease."
Fans can get tickets to the drawing with just a $5 donation or five tickets for $20. Tickets are available at the Chargers ticket office at the stadium as well as the Chargers Park on Murphy Canyon Road. Additional ticket sales locations and other information can be found by calling the HDSA Hotline at (858) 874-4570. Or fans can send a check or money order payable to "HDSA-San Diego" to A Ticket to Cure HD, PO Box 19524, San Diego, CA 92159-0524. Mail orders must be received by Nov. 9. The winning tickets will be drawn on Monday, Nov. 13, 2000.
All winners will also have the opportunity to visit Chargers Park and get their prize autographed.
The drawing will include all jerseys and helmets from the 46 active Chargers players in the game, excluding the helmets worn by Chargers All-Time Team members Junior Seau, Rodney Harrison, John Carney and Darren Bennett. These particular helmets will be available through an auction or drawing at the 40th Anniversary All-Time Team Dinner on Saturday, Nov. 11, with all proceeds to benefit the HDSA.
Huntingtons Disease is a degenerative brain disorder that, directly or indirectly, affects hundreds of thousands of Americans and thousands of San Diegans. Currently there is no cure. But HDSA-San Diego and other chapters around the country are working hard to raise funds to help find a cure. Finding a treatment or cure for HD may help in solving the mystery of other brain disorders such as Alzheimers and Parkinsons.
Dedicated scientists around the world are doing cutting edge research in an effort to prevent, arrest or even reverse the progression of this disease. With the recent accomplishments in genetic research and DNA mapping, including the discovery of the HD gene in 1993, we know the cure will come.
