HERSHEY, Pa. Four lucky individuals have been selected to travel to San Diego, Calif., for a chance to qualify to win $1,000,000 in Hersheys Million Dollar Kick Sweepstakes. Kathleen Gallagher, 37, a United States Postal Service employee from Clearwater, Fla.; Daniel Kaler, 36, a computer mapping technician from Camas, Wash., Julie Karlen, 40, a homemaker from Littleton, Colo., and Joe Polkowski, 34, a printing pressman from Grand Rapids, Mich., were all randomly-selected to participate in a kick-off at 10:30 a.m. on January 17, 2001, in San Diego, California.
The winner of the kick-off in San Diego qualifies for the Grand Prize the opportunity to win $1 million by successfully kicking a field goal on Super Bowl Sunday, January 28, 2001. The attempt will be televised "live" on CBS during the Phil Simms All-Iron Team, between 1 and 2 p.m., as a part of the Super Bowl pre-game activities from the NFL Experience in Tampa, Fla. The kick-off winner and a guest will receive a trip to Tampa, Fla., for the Hersheys Million Dollar Kick attempt, plus tickets to the Super Bowl game.
The four kickers will travel to San Diego where they will earn points by kicking field goals from the 5, 15 and 25 yard lines at the San Diego Chargers Training Facility. San Diego Chargers' kicker John Carney will be on hand to coach the kickers. According to Carney, "Ill do my best to train them, but it will come down to whos got the leg!"
The person accumulating the most points will be flown to Tampa, Fla., where he or she will have the chance to kick for $1 million on Sunday, January 28, 2001, as part of the NFLs Super Bowl pre-game activities. The three other finalists of the kick-off competition will each receive, in addition to a trip to San Diego, a consolation prize of $1,000.
For the first time, San Diego Chargers kicker John Carney will play a role in determining whether the Hersheys Million Dollar Kick field goal attempt will be from 25, 30, 35 or 40-yards. Carney will make field goal attempts of 50, 55 and 60 yards. For each successful field goal attempt by Carney, the Hersheys Million Dollar Kick contestant moves five yards closer to the goal post.
