ROLLING WITH RAY BUCHANAN

It is almost time to play and Atlanta Falcons cornerback Ray Buchanan is sitting alone in the locker room collecting his thoughts. He is going over in his head what he has practiced all week. He knows that preparation is the key to success.

No this is not a Sunday afternoon at the Georgia Dome with fans dressed in Falcons gear. And, the locker room is actually considered back stage. Buchanan is getting ready to take the stage to sing a song he wrote called "Roll With Me." Buchanan hopes to be able to sing the song for a special that will appear during the 2000 season on the NFL’s Under The Helmet television show.

Should the praise, debate and comparisons to singing sensation Will Smith commence with Buchanan’s "Roll With Me" CD that was produced last fall? Maybe not, but if Buchanan puts the same drive and determination that has characterized his 8-year NFL career into his music interests, he is sure to have success.

Said Buchanan about his single: "The song is mainly about being a football player and a rapper. It’s something that I’ve always wanted to do. It’s football related with football issues. I’ve worked on some of the NFL CD Jams in the past, and I’ve always wanted to come out with my own single."

Buchanan, who has perfected his dancing skills after interceptions and touchdown returns, is never afraid of the stage or performing in front of people.

"I started singing with my cousin in high school in Chicago," said Buchanan. "I had role models in music at the time, mainly Run DMC. We used to dress like them. I was Run and he was DMC."

Buchanan said he and his cousin used to win talent shows in high school when they got up on stage and danced and sang. The Pro Bowl cornerback is quick to point out that the singing duo never mimicked the Rap sensations words, but instead used the Run DMC music and made up their own lyrics to the songs.

"Rapping is almost like being a poet," said Buchanan, whose English teachers always used to comment on his talent as a writer when his school writing projects were brought to live by his vernacular. "When you are rhyming you often come across different ideas. It is like telling a story. I used to write poetry when I was young. I didn’t have a lot of charisma when I was younger, so I used to write poems to all of my little girlfriends."

After the success of the talent shows, Buchanan and his cousin started to get requests from people to sing at their shows and events. Buchanan never had an opportunity to record his work until the first NFL Jams CD in 1997. The NFL Jams CD project combined featured top recording artists paired with NFL starts on original music tracks.

"That was the very first time I had a chance to record myself," said Buchanan. "I was kind of nervous at first, but I sounded a whole lot better because of the equipment they used. Everything that they had helped make me sound a little bit better."

Buchanan said he was selected by the NFL to record on the CD after they saw him in action as a rookie in 1993 with Indianapolis.

"When I first got into the NFL with the Colts, I went to the Super Bowl where Ashley Ambrose (Falcons free agent signee in 2000 and a teammate with the Colts) and I sang at different events up on stage," said Buchanan, referring to the various parties and events that highlight the Super Bowl week festivities. "We would make things up and just have fun."

The experience of recording two NFL Jam CDs, spring-boarded Buchanan to start recording some of his music. In the 1998 offseason, he recorded his first album entitled, "Favor" consisting of inspirational songs from soft ballads to jazz to rap songs. Buchanan’s NFL celebrity status has also helped him meet certain recording artists in the industry, such as Jermaine Dupree, who taught him valuable lessons about the rap music industry.

"The first album I did was really meant to be inspirational music," said Buchanan. "It mainly stayed within the churches. Most of the churches that the CDs went to were part of my ministry, mainly in the southeast but also in my hometown of Chicago as well as my college town in Louisville."

Buchanan, who likes to point out that his music has a positive message to children, says that right now the goal of his music is to have fun. He said it is like a hobby for him when he is away from his true profession of playing pro football.

"When I’m rapping it is almost like me playing football," said Buchanan. "I am not really cocky or arrogant. But, I am confident in what I am saying. I am confident on what I am doing on the field. When I get an opportunity to rap or do something on stage, it is like putting on a show. I am ready to put it down. That means I am having fun and ready to cause some excitement."

The excitement of his first recording turned his focus to getting his "Roll With Me" single produced. Through his experience with the NFL Jams project, he was introduced to Carlos and DaDa, two musicians who helped Buchanan with the music for his recording. Buchanan’s recording session took place at Treesound Studio in Atlanta, whose distinguished recording artists include the likes of Bon Jovi among others.

Next on the list of projects for Buchanan is to bring his fellow teammate and best friend Ashley Ambrose on to record some music and record a music video. Of course the project is slated for the offseason, as to not interfere with his main objective - getting the Falcons back to the top of the National Football League.
