"LIFES SUPER IN CENTRAL FLORIDA"
SUPER BOWL XXXV PREGAME SHOW;
STYX AND PYT ALSO TO STAR IN PREGAME FESTIVITIES
Tampas Bob Best will produce and direct his 17th pregame show, which will be hosted by CBSs star of "King of Queens", Kevin James.
Super Bowl XXXV marks the third time this event has been held in Central Florida. This time, the Pregame Show will highlight some of the exciting entertainment opportunities that abound in this part of the state.
Every March and April, thousands of college students head to Central Florida to experience the ritual of Spring Break. Scene I of the Pregame Show will be a Super Bowl version of this tradition, complete with a D.J., a bathing suit contest, volleyball, hula hoops, sumo wrestlers and sky divers. PYT will provide the music.
The day before the Super Bowl, anyone coming to Tampa will notice a few pirates. They will be part of the Tampa celebration known as the Gasparilla Pirate Fest, commemorating the exploits of the legendary Jose Gaspar, who roamed the waters of the Gulf of Mexico during the 18th century.
The event includes an impressive flotilla of more than 1,000 boats, a "siege" of the city, followed by a parade. In Scene II of the Pregame Show, the pirates will take over Raymond James Stadium. This scene will include members of some of the local "krewes" who will sail into the Stadium and attack. As they plunder and pillage, Styx will perform its song "Come Sail Away."
Entertainment comes in many different forms in Central Florida. Some of the greatest artists in the world have appeared here in many unique events. In Scene III, which will be televised by CBS, Sting will entertain the Super Bowl audience, performing his current hit single, "Desert Rose," and close with a hit from his "Police" days, "Roxanne." The cast of 500 local dancers will cover the field with a colorful environment for Stings poignant music.
One of the most successful rock performers of all time, Sting has amassed an amazing 14 Grammy Awards nine solo and five with pop group The Police. As the groups lead singer/songwriter, Sting impressed audiences on both sides of the Atlantic with intriguing melodies and enigmatic, complex lyrics to the hits "Roxanne," "Message in a Bottle," "King of Pain" and
"Dont Stand So Close To Me." And of course, "Every Breath You Take" was one of the biggest hits of the 1980s and remains one of the most-requested songs ever to play on American radio, where it has played more than 5,000,000 times.
Following the breakup of The Police, Sting went on to success as a solo artist, with albums The Dream of the Blue Turtles, Nothing Like the Sun, Soul Cages, Ten Summoners Tales and Mercury Falling all going Platinum. Sting is currently on a world tour promoting his recent seven-times platinum album, Brand New Day, which has been hailed by critics and fans alike and has brought him two Grammy awards Best Pop Album and Best Pop Vocal Performance (Male).
Sting has also lent his talents to the soundtracks of several films, including Leaving Las Vegas, The Object of My Affection, The Mighty, The Thomas Crown Affair and Sabrina. Most recently, he can be heard singing one of the two songs he wrote for the Disney animated feature film, The Emperors New Groove.
The multi-talented artist has also made his mark as an actor, with diverse roles in 15 films that include Quadrophenia and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, as well as performing on Broadway in Kurt Weills Threepenny Opera.
Styx has played more than 200 shows to appreciative audiences around the U.S., Japan, Canada and Europe over the past 18 months. Friends, critics and fans who have seen the recent shows have all been struck by the amazingly energetic performances of all the band members. Joining Tommy Shaw, James "JY" Young and Chuck Panozzo are Lawrence Gowan and Todd Sucherman. Rounding out the band is former Styx member, Glen Burtnik (who replaced Shaw when
he left the group in 1983).
The band decided to take advantage of the high energy level created on stage from consistent, heavy touring by recording a double live album with their current tour co-headliners REO Speedwagon. The show was recorded on June 9, 2000 and aptly named, Arch Allies Live at Riverport. The double CD was released on CMC International Records on Sept. 26, 2000.
Styx will be touring across America until late 2001, before heading back into the studio to record an album of all new material.
Lauren Mayhew, Tracy Williams, Lydia Bell and Ashley Niven are PYT a fresh and exceptionally talented new pop group from Tampa. Though two of the girls are just 14 and the other two are 15 years old, the members of PYT have been friends for years and have extensive experience in live theater, television, radio, print and musical revues.
In the fall of 1998, the four girls decided to form a musical group and began refining their stage choreography and vocal style. The result is PYT (referring to their motto "Prove Yourself True"). Their sound is an enchanting blend of upbeat, r&b-flavored pop with smooth vocal harmonizing a la En Vogue and Boyz II Men. Their self-titled debut album, due out June 2001, includes the new single, "Same Ol, Same Ol and the heartfelt ballad "A Girl Can Dream." Elsewhere, PYTs stylistic versatility is demonstrated by energetic pop/dance tracks like "Something More Beautiful," "PYT (Down With Me)," and light-funky songs like "D.F.W. (Down for Whatever)."
The NFL will celebrate the 225th birthday of America and for the first time ask artists to perform two songs during the National Anthem Ceremony. Immediately following the player introductions, recording legend, Ray Charles, will sing "America The Beautiful," followed by recording giants, The Backstreet Boys singing the "Star Spangled Banner."
Few artists merit the title of legend, however, in the case of Ray Charles, the moniker is well deserved. An international phenomenon, Charles, who has his name on a Star on Hollywood Boulevards Walk of Fame, is a member of three Halls of Fame (Rhythm and Blues, Jazz, Rock & Roll) and has earned 13 Grammys and several gold records.
Presently recognized as the biggest pop group in the world, the Backstreet Boys have sold more than 55 million albums in less than three years. The groups new album, Black & Blue is their fourth release and has sold more than five million copies worldwide in its initial week, setting a new first-week record in international sales. Globally, Black & Blue whose 13-song selection features five songs co-written by members of the group plus two songs solely penned by all five Backstreet Boys has achieved platinum status in 22 countries and gold certification in 10 regions around the world in its first week of release.
The national anthem will be signed by Tampa resident, Tom Cooney.
In addition to the musical performances, the Air Force will provide a B-2 that will circle the Stadium throughout the first song. The Air Forces elite "Thunderbirds" will then fly over the Stadium at the conclusion of the National Anthem. On the field, a joint services color guard will present the official flag, while the field will be virtually covered with other red, white and blue symbols of the flag.
At the conclusion of Super Bowl XXXV, the awarding of the Super Bowl Championship trophy as well as the Most Valuable Player award will be held on the field.
Joining producer/director Bob Best of Best Productions of Tampa, FL on the pregame show will be associate producer Ed Jones, also from Tampa, and choreographer Lesslee Fitzmorris of American All-Star in Mandeville, Louisiana. Hilton Jones, professor at the University of South Florida, will be the pregame shows musical director, serving in this role for the 10th time.
