CONTACTS: DOLPHINS RE-SIGN JAY FIEDLERMIAMI - The Miami Dolphins today re-signed quarterback Jay Fiedler to a five-year contract through the 2006 season, the team announced. The 30-year old Fiedler joined the Dolphins as an unrestricted free agent from Jacksonville prior to the 2000 season. In his two years with the Dolphins, Fiedler has started all 31 regular season games in which he has played, and has completed 477 of 807 passes for 5,692 yards with 34 touchdowns and 33 interceptions. In addition, he has rushed for 588 yards and five touchdowns on 127 attempts, the third-highest rushing total ever by a Dolphins quarterback. In 2001, Fiedler completed 273 of 450 passes for 3,290 yards with 20 touchdowns and 19 interceptions, as he led the Dolphins to an 11-5 regular season mark and a playoff berth for the second year in a row. He became just the second quarterback in team history (14th time) to surpass the 3,000-yard passing mark in a season. His 321 yards rushing in 2001 marked a single-season best for a quarterback in club history, while his four rushing touchdowns tied for the most (David Woodley in 1981). Of those 11 victories this year, five came as a result of fourth quarterback comebacks. Overall in his two seasons with the club, Fiedler has led the Dolphins to seven victories after they had trailed at some point in the fourth quarter. In the final period of those seven games, Fiedler has connected on 49 of 75 passes (65.3%) for 574 yards with seven touchdowns and one interception. The Dolphins’ regular season record with Fiedler as a starter is 21-10. Overall, Fiedler is 22-10 as a starter in the NFL, the second-best mark among active NFL quarterbacks after 32 starts, trailing only the 26-6 mark by St. Louis’ Kurt Warner.
DOLPHINS SIGN DAVE WANNSTEDT TO CONTRACT EXTENSIONMIAMI - The Miami Dolphins today signed Head Coach Dave Wannstedt to a one-year contract extension through the 2004 season, the team announced. Wannstedt, 49, was named the fourth Head Coach in club history on January 16, 2000 after spending the 1999 season as the team’s Assistant Head Coach. In his two years at the helm of the Dolphins, the team has compiled a regular season record of 22-10, the best mark in consecutive seasons by the franchise since 1984-85. This past year, he led the Dolphins to their second straight 11-5 register, as they qualified for the playoffs as a Wild Card team, becoming just one of three AFC teams to earn a postseason berth in both 2000 and 2001. In 2000, the Dolphins captured the AFC East title for the first time since 1994 and advanced to the Divisional round of the playoffs. Wannstedt’s mark with Miami of 22-10 is tied for second-best among NFL Head Coaches during this two-year span. |
