NFL APPOINTS BEAKE VP OF FOOTBALL DEVELOPMENTJOHN BEAKE, the former general manager of the Denver Broncos, has been promoted to NFL vice president of football development and operations, Commissioner PAUL TAGLIABUE announced today. Beake becomes the NFL’s senior football executive, the position previously held by the late GEORGE YOUNG, the NFL’s senior vice president of football operations who died on December 8. Beake’s areas of responsibilities will include all NFL and NFL Europe League football operations. This is his 42nd year as a coach or administrator in high school, college and professional football. Beake came to the NFL in 2000 as vice president of player development/managing director of NFL Europe. Immediately prior to joining the NFL office, Beake was vice president of administration for the Denver Broncos for two years after serving as the team’s general manager for 14 years. As the Broncos’ general manager, the club reached the Super Bowl five times – winning twice – and captured six division championships. Beake also has longtime on-field football experience. An assistant coach for the Kansas City Chiefs from 1968-74, he was the offensive backfield coach for the Chiefs when they defeated the Minnesota Vikings to win Super Bowl IV. He also coached the running backs for the New Orleans Saints in 1976-77. Beake received his masters degree from Penn State where he began his coaching career as a graduate assistant in 1961. He was offensive coordinator at Colorado State University in 1975. Beake graduated from the College of New Jersey and now serves on the board of trustees of the college, located in Trenton, New Jersey. |
