FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE NFL PLAYERS PRESENT $500,000 TO POLICE AND FIRE FUNDAT HALFTIME OF JETS-49ERS MONDAY NIGHT GAME
A check for $500,000 was presented to the New York Police & Fire Widows’ & Children’s Benefit Fund Monday night at halftime of the New York Jets-San Francisco 49ers game on behalf of NFL players around the league. It was the first donation from the more than $5 million pledged by players to organizations dealing with the loss of life and needs resulting from the events of September 11. The check was presented by Vinny Testaverde and Kevin Mawae of the New York Jets, Tiki Barber and Michael Strahan of the New York Giants, and Ray Brown and Lance Schulters of the San Francisco 49ers. A group of New York police, New York firemen, and Port Authority police who served as Jets honorary captains for the game accepted the check from the players at midfield prior to the second-half kickoff. The New York Police & Fire Widows’ & Children’s Benefit Fund was established in 1985 as a nonprofit organization to benefit the families of fallen New York City firefighters and police officers. In the case of the September 11 tragedies, the Fund also will be paying benefits to the families of other uniformed officers who were killed in the incidents. |
