Dennis Green's Comments On Cris
Carter's Retirement Announcement
Thursday, May 3, 2001
Dennis Green commented Thursday afternoon on Cris Carter, who made an announcement on Wednesday evening that 2001 will be his final season.
Carter made the announcement at a banquet speech he gave in Middletown, Ohio, where he attended high school.
"Cris Carter, back in his hometown, announced his retirement last night," Green said. "I'm excited for Cris because he has clearly defined what he wants for his future. He feels this is his last year, not because he does not think he can play anymore, because he thinks this is the right time to leave the game"
This season will be Carter's 12th with the Vikings and 15th year in the NFL. He had 96 catches for 1,274 yards and nine touchdowns in 2000. It was his eighth straight 1,000-yard season and his eighth straight Pro Bowl appearance.
"I think all Minnesota Viking fans throughout the world have enjoyed watching Cris Carter play the game," Green said. "They are fortunate enough to see him play the game for one more year."
In 2000, Carter became only the second player in NFL history to catch 1,000+ passes in a career, joining Jerry Rice. He is second all-time behind Rice in receptions (1,020) and touchdown receptions (123). Carter is also the Vikings' all-time leader in receptions (931), receiving touchdowns (104) and receiving yards (11,512).
"I just think he feels he is ready to move on," Green said. "He's had a great career. He has set numerous records. He performed at a great level and I think he feels at his age right now that it is time for him to do something else."
