NFL SETS ALL-TIME PAID ATTENDANCE RECORD THIRD STRAIGHT YEAR;  SURPASSES 20 MILLION IN TOTAL ATTENDANCE SECOND YEAR IN ROW; WASHINGTON SETS ALL-TIME NFL HOME ATTENDANCE RECORD


Paid attendance for all NFL games set an all-time record for the third straight year, the NFL announced today.

It was also the fourth year in a row that NFL paid attendance increased.

NFL paid attendance for all games played in 2000 of 20,953,652 rose by nearly 200,000 (190,922) over the previous record total of 20,762,730 in 1999. It marked the second time in league history that the 20-million paid attendance mark was reached.

The 2000 NFL regular-season total paid attendance of 16,387,289 for an average of 66,078 per game was also an all-time record for the third consecutive season.

A total of 3,757,231 tickets were sold for 65 preseason games for an average of 57,804. Twelve postseason games produced a sale of 809,132, including 71,921 for Super Bowl XXXV.

The Washington Redskins set an all-time NFL regular-season home paid attendance record with a total of 656,599 for eight games, breaking the record held for 20 years by the 1980 Detroit Lions (634,204). Four other teams topped the 600,000 paid total at home in 2000: Kansas City (627,093), New York Giants (624,085), New York Jets (623,948) and Detroit (606,716).

Seven teams drew more than 1.1 million paid attendance home and away during the regular season, led by Washington (1,182,852). The others were: Denver (1,138,115), New York Jets (1,137,393), Detroit (1,130,099), New York Giants (1,128,682), Kansas City (1,126,157) and Miami (1,122,582).
