NFL TITLES MOST POPULAR SPORTS LEAGUE VIDEO GAMES

NFL video game titles are the most popular sports league games in the industry, according to 2000 year-end sales figures.

Among the 100 best-selling video game titles in terms of units sold in 2000, eight were NFL-licensed games. Sports leagues behind the NFL with titles in the top 100 were NBA (4), MLB (3) and NHL (1).

The NFL claimed the top four and six of the top eight sports league-licensed games:

1. EA Sports’ Madden NFL 2001 (PlayStation)
2. Sega’s NFL 2K1 (Dreamcast)
3. EA Sports’ Madden NFL 2001 (PlayStation2)
4. EA Sports’ Madden NFL 2001 (Nintendo-64)
5. Sega’s NBA 2K1 (Dreamcast)
6. EA Sports’ Triple Play 2001 (Nintendo-64)
7. 989 Studios’ NFL GameDay 2001 (PlayStation)
8. Midway’s NFL Blitz 2001 (Nintendo-64)

An additional 2000 year-end report indicated that NFL titles accounted for the top-selling game genre for Sony PlayStation2 with 20.9% of total unit market share. Head-to-head fighting games were second (13.4) followed by extreme sports titles (10.5%).
