JAPANESE PLAYERS RETURN TO TRAINING CAMPS

WITH 49ERS & REDSKINS;

KAWAGUCHI & AMAYA TO COMPETE FOR ROSTER SPOTS

Japanese linebacker MASAFUMI KAWAGUCHI of the San Francisco 49ers and wide receiver AKIHITO AMAYA of the Washington Redskins have returned to training camps with their teams, the NFL announced today.

Kawaguchi and Amaya originally signed 10-day contracts to practice and compete in Sunday’s American Bowl game in Osaka, Japan.  Both players were impressive during their stay, and as a result, head coaches STEVE MARIUCCI of the 49ers and STEVE SPURRIER of the Redskins requested permission for them to return to the team’s training camps after the game.

“This is a tribute to their ability and hard work,” said NFL Commissioner PAUL TAGLIABUE.  “The development of football players outside of the United States is critical to the future growth of American football in Europe, Asia and elsewhere.”

Kawaguchi saw action on defense and special teams on Sunday while Amaya played at wide receiver, rushing one time for three yards in Washington’s 38-7 win.

Both players are NFL Europe League veterans.  Kawaguchi has spent the past six seasons with the Amsterdam Admirals, emerging as a steady tackler and consistent performer.  Amaya has spent the past two seasons with the Rhein Fire, totaling 18 receptions for 169 yards.

“I’m so happy to get this chance,” Kawaguchi said.  “It has always been my dream to play in the NFL.  I hope my experience will help other Japanese players to realize their dreams.”

Mariucci was impressed with Kawaguchi’s competitive nature and football instincts while Spurrier took notice of Amaya’s dedication in the weight room.

“There are no guarantees,” Mariucci said.  “But we’re going to give Masa a chance to show us what he can do.  He loves to play the game, he works hard and he has had some great experience playing in NFL Europe.”

Amaya has won the praise of seven-time Pro Bowl cornerback DARRELL GREEN.

“I’m really impressed with what I have seen of him,” said the 20-year veteran.  “He moves really quickly and makes excellent cuts.  Those are some of the things you look for in a good receiver, and he definitely has a lot of talent.”
