NFL LEADS SPORTS VIDEO GAME INDUSTRY
NFL Video Games Outperform MLB, NBA and NHL Games Combined
NFL-licensed video games are the most popular sports league games in the industry, according to 2001 year-end sales figures. The top 100 best-selling video games of 2001 included seven NFL games – more than Major League Baseball, NBA and NHL combined, according to retail industry research firm NPD Group. The research indicates that NFL video games accounted for more than $300 million in sales as more than seven million NFL games were sold around the world in 2001. The seven million NFL games sold outnumbered licensed games sold by Major League Baseball, the NBA and the NHL combined. NFL games claim the top two best-selling positions among all sports licensed games for game systems Sony PlayStation 2 and Microsoft Xbox. In addition, the NFL stands above all sports games for Nintendo Game Cube. EA Sports’ Madden NFL 2002 is the second-best selling game across all video game systems in North America.
