WHAT:            President GEORGE W. BUSH formally appoints former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver and Pro
                         Football Hall of Famer LYNN SWANN to chair the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.
                         Swann, as chair of the 20-member council, will recommend programs to the President and the Secretary
                         of Health and Human Services which encourage nationwide participation in physical fitness and sports
                         activities.

                         EMMITT SMITH of the Dallas Cowboys, who will attempt to break WALTER PAYTON’s all-time NFL rushing
                         record this season (needs 539 yards), will be in attendance and named a President’s Council board member.

                         Hundreds of youngsters will attend the event on the White House’s South Lawn to participate in numerous
                         sports activities, including a “football throw” through inflatable NFL targets.

The NFL is the favorite sports league of youngsters aged 7-11 as well as Americans 12 and older, according to the 2001 ESPN Sports Poll.
 

More than 3.5 million children participate in NFL youth football programs such as NFL Gatorade Punt, Pass and Kick; NFL Flag; the NFL Junior Player Development program; NFL Coaching Academy; and the NFL/National Football Foundation Play It Smart program. In addition, millions of other youngsters and adults take part in NFL-supported programs run by Boys & Girls Clubs, the YMCA, Pop Warner and the Police Athletic League.
