Alexandria Crumble of Calumet H.S. Awarded $10,000 NFL ScholarshipThe first winner of the NFL/JEANNETTE WINTERS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is ALEXANDRIA CRUMBLE of Calumet High School in Gary, Indiana, the NFL announced today. The NFL created the scholarship in memory of U.S. Marine Sgt. Jeannette Winters, the first American woman killed in Afghanistan in the war against terrorism. Winters was a graduate of Calumet High School and a native of Gary. The award will annually recognize a college-bound female athlete who attends a Gary high school and exemplifies strong character and leadership qualities. The NFL also created a scholarship fund in honor of the first man killed in Afghanistan, CIA Intelligence Officer JOHNNY (MIKE) SPANN of Winfield, Alabama. “The NFL is honored to recognize Alexandria with the first NFL/Jeannette Winters Memorial Scholarship,” said NFL Commissioner PAUL TAGLIABUE. “Ms. Winters set a tremendous example of bravery, leadership and love for her country. I am sure that Alexandria will be inspired by her legacy as we all have been.” Calumet High School principal LEROY MILLER gave the award to Crumble at the school’s awards night last night (May 20). Miller participated in an NFL press conference with Commissioner Tagliabue at Super Bowl XXXVI in New Orleans this past February to announce the creation of the scholarship program. Crumble, the senior class’ valedictorian, plans to study pharmacy at Butler University in Indianapolis. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the captain and four-year member of the basketball and volleyball teams. ## |
