EXPANSION TEXANS FIRST TO OPEN 2002 TRAINING CAMPS

They’ve been waiting for this moment for the past 1,384 days.

Since the Houston Texans were granted an NFL franchise on October 6, 1998 – 1,384 days from this Saturday, July 20 – they have planned and pointed towards one thing – the day the 97 new players on their roster report to Houston to begin the team’s first-ever training camp.

Buckle ‘em up! because here come the new Texans on Saturday as the first NFL team to open 2002 training camps, followed by the other 31 in the expanded, realigned NFL that all will be in camp by July 28.

“There are so many things we have to do on and off the field,” says Texans quarterback DAVID CARR, the first overall choice in the 2002 NFL Draft.

The Texans will train at Reliant Park, across the street from their new home, 69,500-seat Reliant Stadium.  It will be the first time an NFL team has trained in Houston since 1966, when the Houston Oilers finished a three-year summer stint at their regular-season practice facility.

The Texans have set up a series of events for their new fans – some of who have fans of their own.  The team has run a clever outdoor billboard campaign featuring Houston celebrities who love their football and welcome the team to town with the slogan, “Got Tickets?” (like the “Got Milk?” campaign).  Featured wearing eyeblack are a diverse group that includes “DESTINY’S CHILD, “ZZ TOP, MARY LOU RETTON, A.J. FOYT, and former President GEORGE and first lady BARBARA BUSH.

They can all welcome the Texans at:

·         Eight free evening practices.  Fans will see the team and the Texans Cheerleaders under the lights, and be able to partake in interactive games.  KILT, the Texans’ flagship radio station, will do live remotes from the night practices.  Afterwards, fans will be able to line up for autographs from their new heroes.

·         A scrimmage against their new arch-, cross state-rival, the Dallas Cowboys.  Tickets (30,000) are already sold out for the August 2 session at Robertson Stadium on the University of Houston campus.  “I think the Cowboys should be one of our biggest rivalries and should generate more interest than any other rivalry in the state,” says the man who brought the NFL back to Houston, Texans owner BOB MC NAIR.  “It’s a rivalry we certainly want to nurture.  When we don’t play the Cowboys in the regular season, it is our intention to play them every preseason.”  The Texans host the Cowboys Sunday night (September 8, ESPN, 8:30 PM ET) on Kickoff 2002 Weekend.

The Cowboys-Texans scrimmage is on the site of Jeppeson Stadium, the venue of the 1962 AFL Championship

FAMILIAR SURROUNDINGS

Four NFL teams – Chicago, Dallas, Detroit and Tampa Bay – will encamp in new training sites this year, but many clubs will return to the familiar venues they have spent their summer months in for years.  The NFL training camp longevity king?  The Green Bay Packers will return on July 24 for their 44th consecutive summer at St. Norbert College in DePere, Wisconsin.  The longest active training camp tenures:

game between the Oilers and the Dallas Texans.  Players who participated in that game will be honored as part
of the night’s festivities

·         A Houston Texans Open House at Reliant Stadium on August 20, free to all season ticket holders.

Those kinds of events are typical of the fan-friendly activities that NFL teams schedule throughout training camps.

The New York Jets hold a free night practice session ending with a fireworks display (12,000 fans attended the inaugural one last summer).  The Cleveland Browns will invite 1,000 youngsters from community-based programs to “junior training camp” clinics.  The Miami Dolphins hold a training camp “garage sale” of old equipment with the proceeds going to high school and youth football.  The Baltimore Ravens host a photo session with players…the San Diego Chargers a “Fan Fest” for children…and the San Francisco 49ers a “Football 101” seminar.

Meanwhile, those fans who can’t make it to training camps this summer can experience it anyway when they tune into “Hard Knocks: Training Camp With the Dallas Cowboys,” the Emmy-nominated HBO Sports series produced by NFL Films.  The first sports-based reality series, taking viewers behind the scenes at the Cowboys’ training camp, will debut on HBO on July 31 (11:00 PM ET) and air each Wednesday through September 4, the day before the NFL season opens.

Dallas special teams coach JOE AVEZZANO believes that the show will introduce America to two relatively unknown Cowboys – running backs TROY HAMBRICK and ROBERT THOMAS – who he predicts will be the surprise stars of the show.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if either one of these guys become focal points because each of them has personality,” says Avezzano.  “I like that, and HBO will like that.”

With many clubs returning to familiar training-camp sites, four this year will practice at new locations.  The Cowboys will now train at the Alamodome in San Antonio; Chicago Bears at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Illinois; Detroit Lions at their new home training site in Allen Park, Michigan; and Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Disney’s Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.

More and more, NFL clubs are training as close to home as possible.

Chicago, for instance, after 18 years in Wisconsin, moves its camp site to Illinois.  “The Bears represent not only the people of Chicago, but the people of Illinois,” says their president, TED PHILLIPS.  “The state is a big part of our team’s history, beginning in Decatur (the club’s first home in 1920), and we feel it is appropriate to keep all aspects of Bears football in Illinois.”

No matter where NFL clubs encamp, their presence is an economic windfall for the communities that host the teams.

Thibodaux, Louisiana is a perfect example.  The New Orleans Saints moved their camp there to Nicholls State University two years ago.  The South Louisiana Economic Council estimates that the team’s presence last summer pumped $2.8 million into the local economy.

“Camp has been good to Thibodaux and the surrounding area,” says the city’s mayor, CHARLES CAILLOUET.  “The Council’s report is a good indicator to factually show that training camp has a dynamic economic impact.”

Even Canton, Ohio, the birthplace of the NFL and the yearly host to the induction ceremonies of the Pro Football Hall of Fame that is the centerpiece of an 11-day summer festival, enjoys an annual economic windfall thanks to the NFL.  The city estimates that $10-12 million is pumped into the local economy due to the 700,000 visitors to the festival and induction ceremonies.  To accommodate the influx of fans, the induction moves this year from the Hall itself to nearby Fawcett Stadium, site of the annual Hall of Fame Game.

That game – on Monday night, August 5 (ABC, 8:00 PM ET) -- will also have a Texans flavor, as the team will play the New York Giants in its first NFL action ever.

The game follows the induction ceremonies on Saturday, August 3 of the class of 2002 – the late GEORGE ALLEN, DAVE CASPER, DAN HAMPTON, JIM KELLY and JOHN STALLWORTH.

The weekend in Canton also features the second annual NFL Youth Football Summit that brings together more than 150 coaches, administrators and youth football supporters for seminars on all aspects of the sport.

The other preseason game that weekend is also on national television (ESPN, 10:00 PM ET), as the San Francisco 49ers take on the Washington Redskins in Osaka, Japan on Saturday in that city’s first American Bowl.  It will be the debut of Washington’s STEVE SPURRIER as an NFL head coach.
