DERRICK THOMAS TO RECEIVE POSTHUMOUS DEGREE SATURDAY

MAY 9 (morning)--Family members and representatives of the Chiefs front office and NFL office will be in attendance this Saturday, May 13, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama when Derrick Thomas is awarded his bachelor's degree posthumously from the University of Alabama. The degree will be awarded during ceremonies on campus at Coleman Coliseum beginning at 1:30 PM.

Accepting Thomas' degree in Criminal Justice and Social Welfare will be his mother, Edith Morgan, and grandmother, Annie Adams. Representing the Kansas City Chiefs will be Carl Peterson, the team's president, Dave Adolph, former assistant head coach, Lamonte Winston, director of player programming, and Kristin Nix, Winston's assistant. Guy Troupe, director of player programs for the National Football League, will also be in attendance as will Mike DuBose, Alabama's head football coach, Ken Gaddy, director of the Paul W. Bryant Museum, and Kevin Almond, associate director of athletics.

While at the University of Alabama, Thomas earned unanimous All-American status, won the Butkus Trophy and was named CBS' Defensive Player of the Year.

An exhibit of Derrick Thomas memorabilia will go on display on Saturday at 10 AM at the Paul W. Bryant Museum. In February, a Derrick Thomas Endowed Scholarship was established by an initial gift from Eliza and Hugh Culverhouse Jr. of Miami. The scholarship benefits students who are committed to community service.
