NFC NEWS ‘N’ NOTES

ARIZONA MOVES TO WEST COAST: The Arizona Cardinals are excited about the plans of new offensive coordinator MARC TRESTMAN. Trestman spent the 1995-96 seasons as the San Francisco 49ers’ offensive coordinator and is bringing the 49ers’ offensive philosophy to Arizona.

"I’ve been in quite a few offenses over the last few years and I can look at the playbook and tell you right away whether I think it’s going to be effective enough," says Cardinals running back LARRY CENTERS. "And no doubt about it, this offense is like stealing."

One especially enthusiastic Cardinal is quarterback JAKE PLUMMER, who passed for club rookie records of 2,203 yards and 15 touchdowns last year. "Marc has a young mind. He likes to attack defenses," says Plummer. "That’s the one thing I’m excited about. We’re going to go downfield, spread the ball around, be an attack-style offense. It should be pretty exciting."

"This offense is designed for a good quarterback to come in and be very, very successful," said Cardinals Vice President of Player Personnel BOB FERGUSON. "And if you have a great quarterback, you can reach the level of Super Bowl champions."

PACKERS IN THE COMMUNITY…AND ON THE BOULEVARDS: The Green Bay Packers Foundation recently donated $110,000 to 53 Wisconsin charitable organizations. "It’s just a great way to give something back to your state," said Packers President BOB HARLAN. Since the organization’s founding 10 years ago, more than $500,000 has been donated to the community.

Meanwhile, the city of Green Bay plans to rename a street after Packers quarterback BRETT FAVRE. The Green Bay City Council will vote this week on changing Advance Street to "Brett Favre Pass." The half-mile street will lead to the new Brett Favre Steakhouse.

Favre would join a distinguished group of eight Packers players and coaches who have their own addresses in the greater Green Bay area:

NAME POSITION YEARS STREET
Clarke Hinkle Back 1932-41 Hinkle Street
Mike Holmgren Head Coach 1992-present Holmgren Way
Don Hutson End 1935-45 Hutson Road
Cecil Isbell Back 1938-42 Isbell Street
Earl "Curly" Lambeau Head Coach 1921-49 Lambeau Road
Vince Lombardi Head Coach 1959-67 Lombardi Avenue
Verne Lewellen Back 1924-32 Lewellen Road
Bart Starr Quarterback 1956-71 Starr Court

NFC PLAYERS SHINE OVERSEAS: Three NFC-allocated players, including two from the Chicago Bears, are among the standouts in this spring’s NFL Europe League season. Bears wide receiver MARCUS ROBINSON (Rhein Fire) leads the league with 548 receiving yards and is second in the league lead with 28 catches and four touchdown receptions. Bears defensive end MIKE CROEL (Rhein Fire) leads all NFL-allocated defenders and is tied for fourth in the league with five sacks. Quarterback KURT WARNER (Amsterdam Admirals), from the St. Louis Rams, leads all NFL Europe League quarterbacks with 1,510 passing yards and 12 touchdowns.

BUCCANEERS REWARDED & HONORED: Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager RICK MC KAY recently signed a five-year contract extension. "The Buccaneers’ ship has been righted and Rich has had very much to do with that," said Buccaneers Executive Vice President JOEL GLAZER. "He’s proven to have a keen eye for football talent, an extremely strong grasp of the NFL’s new economic system and a consistent ability to make the right choices."

McKay joined the Buccaneers in 1992 and was named general manager on November 8, 1994. He is responsible for the hiring of head coach TONY DUNGY and the drafting of five 1998 Pro Bowl players -- running back MIKE ALSTOTT, linebacker DERRICK BROOKS, running back WARRICK DUNN, safety JOHN LYNCH and defensive tackle WARREN SAPP. Tampa Bay finished 1997 with a 10-6 record and advanced to the Divisional Playoffs after a Wild Card victory over the Detroit Lions. It was the club’s first winning season and playoff berth since 1982.

Another Pro Bowl Buccaneer, linebacker HARDY NICKERSON, will be honored on June 7 at the NFL Players Association Mackey Awards banquet with the BYRON R. "WHIZZER" WHITE Award for his off-field community service. The award is considered one of the top humanitarian and public service honors in sports. Through his foundation, Nickerson has funded programs to benefit children in both Florida and his home state of California.

ALL-TIME EAGLE RETURNS: HAROLD CARMICHAEL finished his 13-year career with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1983 as the club’s all-time leading receiver, and now, 15 years later, is returning to the team as director of player and community relations. Carmichael will coordinate all team player programs, including financial education, family assistance, career internships and continuing education.
