AFC NEWS ‘N’ NOTES

BROWNS OWNER TO ATTEND DRAFT: Cleveland Browns Owner and Chairman ALFRED LERNER will travel to New York City to personally greet the team’s selection in Saturday’s NFL Draft. The expansion Browns have the first overall pick in the draft and 13 selections throughout the seven rounds.

"This is an exciting and invigorating time for the entire Cleveland Browns organization and our many legions of fans worldwide," said Lerner. "We are anxiously awaiting the start of the 1999 season, and the draft represents another major step in our development."

This is the second time the Browns have the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. Cleveland selected quarterback BOBBY GARRETT from Stanford with the first pick in 1954. Garrett played that season for Green Bay, his lone NFL year.

LESS IS MORE: A Pro Bowl selection each of the past three seasons, Jacksonville Jaguars tackle TONY BOSELLI felt he would be more effective in 1999 if he were quicker.

After cutting most carbohydrates from his daily intake as part of the "Boselli Diet," as he calls it, Boselli has reduced his weight from 328 to 314 pounds. On an average day, the diet calls for eggs and bacon for breakfast, egg salad and cold cuts for lunch, and chicken or meat with vegetables for dinner. He also drinks several protein shakes.

"It’s really not that hard," Boselli said. However, there was one tough part. "Giving up desserts," he said. "I’ve always liked desserts."

TRAVELING/NEW-LOOK TITANS: The Tennessee Titans have been busy this offseason.

On March 8, the team kicked off "The Titans Caravan," a two-month tour of 48 cities in six states. Head coach JEFF FISHER, players and team executives are taking part in the tour. "I’m looking forward to getting out and seeing some other parts of the state, meeting new people and new fans," Fisher said.

"It was very exciting for me to get out and meet some of the people of Tennessee," said Titans quarterback STEVE MC NAIR, who visited children at the Jackson-Madison County General Hospital and the West Tennessee Cerebral Palsy Clinic before addressing the Huntingdon (Tenn.) High School football team. "We have a lot of great fans here. It was a special experience for me."

On a later leg of the caravan, Titans Pro Bowl running back EDDIE GEORGE signed autographs for more than 300 military personnel at the Fort Campbell military base. He then spoke with children at an after-school program at the Parker Bennett Center and promised game tickets to the students who exhibit the best behavior and decision-making during the school year. "It doesn’t seem too long ago that I was sitting in those chairs faced with making good or bad decisions as a youngster," said George.

On April 13, the Titans revealed their new uniform design that switches the team’s dominant colors from Columbia blue, red and white to navy blue, white and "Titans" blue. White helmets feature a T-shaped dagger in the middle of a flaming circle.

MUNOZ ON THE MAP: Last summer, former Cincinnati Bengals tackle ANTHONY MUNOZ was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. Soon his name may be on display across the state in Cincinnati. Munoz and former Cincinnati Reds catcher JOHNNY BENCH are scheduled to have streets named after them when their former teams’ new stadiums open.

"These are not only two great heroes in their sports, but two men who have contributed a lot to this community in many other ways," said Cincinnati City Council member TODD PORTUNE.

The proposed "Anthony Munoz Way" – to be voted upon by the city council -- would wind around the east side of the new Paul Brown Stadium, which opens in August 2000.

INTERNATIONAL BRONCOS: In the span of less than a week, the Denver Broncos hosted a government official from the world’s most populous country, and had one of their players visit the world’s smallest continent.

Last Saturday (4/10), Chinese Premier ZHU RONGJI made a 20-minute stop at the Broncos’ complex as part of his visit to Colorado. Zhu also joined Broncos quarterback JOHN ELWAY and Colorado Governor BILL OWENS for dinner at the governor’s mansion. "I am proud to pay a visit to the Broncos," Zhu said. "In my own name, I extend an invitation for them to visit China."

Before they visit China, however, the two-time Super Bowl champion Broncos meet San Diego in the first ever NFL preseason game in Australia in an American Bowl on August 8 at the new Olympic Stadium in Sydney (August 7 in the United States). Broncos defensive end HARALD HASSELBACH and Chargers tackle JOHN JACKSON are visiting Sydney on a media tour from April 12-16.

"It’s exciting," said Broncos Vice President of Administration JOHN BEAKE, who also made the trip. "The timing is perfect with the new Olympic Stadium built for 2000. Australians have a greater awareness with our games on TV there. Also, DARREN BENNETT of the Chargers played Australian Rules Football."
