DOLPHINS RB LAMAR SMITH & P MATT TURK,
EAGLES DE HUGH DOUGLAS
NAMED NFL PLAYERS OF WILD CARD WEEK
Running back LAMAR SMITH and punter MATT TURK of the Miami Dolphins and defensive end HUGH DOUGLAS of the Philadelphia Eagles are the NFL Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week for Wild Card Weekend (December 30-31), the NFL announced today.
Smith had an NFL playoff-record 40 carries for 209 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winner, in the Dolphins 23-17 overtime victory over the Indianapolis Colts. The 209 yards were the second-best single-game total in NFL playoff history (ERIC DICKERSON, 248, 1985). Smith also had three receptions for 28 yards.
With Indianapolis holding a 14-0 halftime advantage, Smith had a two-yard touchdown run on the opening possession of the second half to cut the Colts lead in half. On the Dolphins game-winning drive in overtime, Smith had six carries for 49 yards, including a bruising 17-yard scoring run to end the game. He also had one catch for seven yards on the drive.
"It was a great job by Lamar," said Dolphins guard MARK DIXON. "He runs so hard and he's so effective after he gets hit."
Douglas had five tackles, 2.0 sacks and a forced fumble that led to the Eagles first touchdown in Philadelphias 21-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Eagles defense limited Tampa Bay to 50 yards rushing and 199 total yards of offense.
With the Buccaneers leading 3-0 and 3:21 left in the second quarter, Tampa Bay quarterback SHAUN KING dropped back to pass on a third-and-19 from his own 25. Douglas sped around the end, sacked King and forced a fumble that was recovered by Philadelphia. Four players later, the Eagles took the lead for good on a touchdown run by quarterback DONOVAN MC NABB.
"I was trying to get to him before he threw the ball," said Douglas. "For some reason, the tackle blocked down. I just hit him. That made the momentum swing our way."
Turk averaged 46.0 yards on three punts as the Dolphins allowed no punt-return yards. He had a pair of 50+-yard punts and placed one inside the 20-yard line. With no punt return yards allowed, Turk had a net of 46.0 yards.
"For him to handle it how he did and how he has been, it's tough," Miami kicker OLINDO MARE said of Turk, whose brother DAN, an NFL long-snapper for 15 years, died on December 23. "I don't know how he does it."
