REGGIE WHITE FACES PACKERS ON MNF
BRETT FAVRE and REGGIE WHITE symbolized the Green Bay Packers resurgence of the 1990s, highlighted by a Super Bowl victory in 1996.
Favre, who was traded from Atlanta to Green Bay in 1992, led the Packers offense and won three consecutive NFL Most Valuable Player awards from 1995-97. White, who signed with the Packers in 1993, was the defensive leader of the team and won the Associated Press Defensive Player of the Year Award (1998) and twice led the NFC in sacks (1993 and 1998).
This Monday night, the two will be reunited but will wear different jerseys when the Packers travel to Charlotte, North Carolina to face the Carolina Panthers.
After retiring from football and the Packers following the 1998 season, White got the urge to play again in 2000 and signed with Carolina.
He is the teams elder statesman and leads the club with 5.5 sacks and 12 quarterback hurries. While thoroughly enjoying playing for Carolina, White has a soft spot for Green Bay and the Packers.
"Theres an aura about Green Bay and Lambeau Field and the people there," says White. "It's something that you can't get out of your blood."
And Favre, likewise, has a soft spot for White.
"It will be fun to play Reggie," says Favre. "I wish he was on our side."
But White is not with the Packers and on Monday night, he and Favre will be opponents. In fact, it will be Whites job to beat rookie tackle Mark Tauscher and sack Favre. The nostalgia White has for the Packers will not be brought onto the field.
"I'm eager to talk to all of them," says White about his former teammates. "The thing is, I know that once we line up, everything -- all the relationships and the friendships -- is going to be blanked out until the game is over. The guys know that IlI give everything Ive got."
CLOSE GAMES: Nine Monday night games this season have been decided by seven points or less. The record for most Monday night games decided by seven points in a season is 10, set last year.
