EAGLES RB-PR-KR BRIAN MITCHELL EARNS PRIME TIME AWARD;
RAMS QB KURT WARNER, REDSKINS DE MARCO COLEMAN
& PR DEION SANDERS NAMED NFC PLAYERS OF WEEK 5
Philadelphia Eagles running back-punt and kick returner BRIAN MITCHELL accounting for 290 yards in the Eagles 38-10 win over Atlanta Sunday night has become the third recipient of the special NFL "Prime Time" Player of the Week Award, the NFL announced today.
In the regular NFC Player of the Week categories, quarterback KURT WARNER of the St. Louis Rams, and defensive end MARCO COLEMAN and punt returner DEION SANDERS of the Washington Redskins were named the NFC Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week for games played the fifth week of the 2000 season (October 1-2).
Mitchells 290 total yards produced two touchdowns in the Eagles victory. He rushed for 105 yards on two carries, including an 85-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter; totaled 35 receiving yards on three catches; returned two kickoffs for 135 yards, including an 89-yard TD; and returned two punts for 15 yards.
Mitchells kickoff-return touchdown was his 11th career combined kick-punt return TD which tied him with ERIC METCALF for most in NFL history. He had a 72-yard punt-return touchdown in Week 4, giving him return touchdowns in back-to-back weeks.
Warner became the first quarterback since 1950 (quarterback records are incomplete prior to then) with two career "perfect games" when he completed 24 of 30 attempts (80.0 percent) for 390 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions for a perfect 158.3 passer rating in the Rams 57-31 win over the San Diego Chargers. A 158.3 rating is the highest a passer can achieve. Warner also accomplished the feat last season against Cincinnati on October 3.
In his third season out of Northern Iowa, this is Warners second Player of the Week Award.
Coleman had 3.0 sacks for minus-18 yards and 11 tackles in the Redskins 20-17 overtime win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He had one sack to effectively end Tampa Bays drive at the end of the first half, and two in the fourth quarter on successive series.
In his ninth season out of Georgia Tech, this is Colemans first Player of the Week Award.
Sanders had a crucial 57-yard punt return in overtime to put the ball at the Buccaneers eight-yard line which led to the eventual game-winning field goal. With Washington and Tampa Bay tied 17-17 in overtime, Buccaneers punter MARK ROYALS boomed a 50-yard punt from his own 15-yard line about two minutes into the period. Sanders fielded the punt at his 35 and immediately broke two tackles. He then sprinted to his right, picked up blockers and was off on his 57-yard return.
In his 12th season out of Florida State, this is Sanders sixth Player of the Week Award, but first in the special teams category. He has won four defensive honors and the original Prime Time award for Week 3 of 1998 (New York Giants RB-PR TIKI BARBER won the award for Week 6 of last season). This is the first time the Redskins have had two winners in the same week.
Other nominees for NFC Offensive Player of Week 5 were: St. Louis wide receiver ISAAC BRUCE, who had nine catches for 167 yards and two touchdowns; Washington running back Stephen Davis, who rushed for 141 yards on 28 carries (a 5.0-yard average); Philadelphia quarterback Donovan Mc Nabb, who completed 30 of 44 passes (68.1 percent) for 311 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions; Minnesota wide receiver RANDY MOSS, who had seven catches for 168 yards and three touchdowns (61, 17, and 50 yards), and Vikings running back ROBERT SMITH, who rushed for 134 yards on 16 carries (8.4-yard average), including a 65-yard touchdown, in the Vikings 31-24 win over Detroit; Chicago wide receiver Marcus Robinson, who had two catches for 126 yards, both for touchdowns (68 and 58 yards) in the Bears 27-24 win over Green Bay; and Dallas running back EMMITT SMITH, who rushed for 132 yards and one touchdown in the Cowboys 16-13 overtime victory over Carolina.
Other nominees for NFC Defensive Player of Week 5 were: Washington cornerback DARRELL GREEN, who had an interception and a forced fumble; Green Bay defensive end CLETIDUS HUNT, who had 2.0 sacks; Philadelphia rookie defensive tackle COREY SIMON, who had five tackles and 1.0 sack; and Chicago rookie linebacker BRIAN URLACHER, who tied for the team lead with 10 tackles, had 1.0 sack and recovered a fumble.
Other nominees for NFC Special Teams Player of Week 5 were: Atlanta punt returner TIM DWIGHT, who scored a 70-yard punt-return touchdown; New York punter BRAD MAYNARD, who averaged 55.4 yards on five punts in the Giants 28-14 loss to Tennessee; and St. Louis kicker JEFF WILKINS, who scored 21 points with five field goals and six extra points.
