NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE SUNDAY RESULTS

 

Each Sunday evening, the National Football League will e-mail scores, recaps and standings in order to assist you in your coverage of the 2001 regular season.  The e-mail will be sent at approximately 9:00 p.m. ET, following Sunday’s afternoon action.

Green Bay – Falcons quarterback Chris Chandler threw for 352 yards and two touchdowns as Atlanta improved to 3-1 on the road.  The Falcons’ defense intercepted Packers quarterback Brett Favre three times, including two by cornerback Ashley Ambrose.

Baltimore – The Browns intercepted Ravens quarterback Elvis Grbac four times, including three by rookie cornerback Anthony Henry and a 43-yard INT-TD by safety Devin Bush.  Cleveland rookie running back Ben Gay rushed for 56 yards and his first NFL touchdown.

New Orleans – Saints quarterback Aaron Brooks completed 19 of 22 passes for 249 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions for a 144.1 passer rating. New Orleans wide receiver Joe Horn had 8 receptions for 148 yards and Saints tight end Boo Williams caught two touchdown passes.  New Orleans running back Rickey Williams rushed for 120 yards and one touchdown on 28 carries.

Miami – The Jets’ defense forced 5 turnovers, including a 60-yard INT-TD by cornerback Aaron Glenn and a 63-yard INT-TD by safety Victor Green.  New York has now won 8 consecutive games over the Dolphins and moved into first place in the AFC East with a 7-3 record.  The Jets have won four games in a row and are 5-0 on the road.

Dallas – The Eagles’ defense held the Cowboys to 213 total yards and forced four turnovers.  Philadelphia linebacker Jeremiah Trotter had a 50-yard INT-TD to close out the first half and put the Eagles up 20-0.  Philadelphia kicker David Akers had a career-high five field goals.

Carolina – San Francisco’s Jose Cortez kicked a 26-yard FG in overtime to pull out a comeback victory.  49ers quarterback Jeff Garcia led the team 66 yards in the final minutes of the fourth quarter and threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Terrell Owens with one second remaining.  Garcia’s pass to tight end Eric Johnson for the two-point conversion sent the contest into overtime.  Garcia finished with 305 passing yards and three scores, including two to wide receiver J.J. Stokes.

Buffalo – Seahawks running back Shaun Alexander rushed for 93 yards and scored the go-ahead touchdown as Seattle improved to 5-4.  Seahawks kicker Rian Lindell converted all three field-goal attempts, including two in the fourth-quarter with a long of 51 yards.

Cincinnati – Tennessee’s Derrick Mason returned the opening kickoff 101 yards for a touchdown to put the Titans in the lead for good.  Tennessee wide receiver Kevin Dyson added a 28-yard TD reception and finished with four catches for 55 yards.  Titans quarterback Steve McNair led the club with 68 rushing yards and also passed for 172 yards and a score.

Tampa Bay – Bears wide receiver Marty Booker had seven catches for 165 yards and three touchdowns as Chicago improved to 7-2 and sit atop the NFC Central Division.  Bears quarterback Jim Miller passed for 228 yards and three scores.  Chicago is 5-0 in games decided by seven points or less this season.

Arizona – Cardinals quarterback Jake Plummer completed 21 of 33 passes for 334 yards with four touchdowns versus one interception for a 124.2 passer rating.  Arizona wide receiver Frank Sanders had seven catches for 127 yards with one score and Cardinals wide receiver David Boston had five receptions for 80 yards and two TDs.  The two teams combined for 895 total yards (Arizona 417, Detroit 478).

Pittsburgh – Steelers quarterback Kordell Stewart threw for 266 yards with one touchdown and rushed for 50 yards and another score.  Pittsburgh wide receiver Hines Ward had nine receptions for 112 yards with a 28-yard TD.  The Steelers outgained the Jaguars 402-234 in total yards.

Oakland – Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon completed 25 of 38 passes for 311 yards with four touchdowns versus one interception for a 115.1 passer rating.  Oakland wide receiver Jerry Rice had eight receptions for 131 yards and three touchdowns while Raiders wide receiver Tim Brown added six catches for 62 yards and a score.

Denver – The Washington Redskins won their fourth game in a row.  Redskins quarterback Kent Graham, filling in for injured starter Tony Banks, completed 12 of 18 attempts for 123 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winning TD pass to tight end Zernon Flemister with 2:48 remaining.  Washington wide receiver Michael Westbrook had nine catches for 104 yards and a touchdown.

New England – The St. Louis Rams, led by RB Marshall Faulk and QB Kurt Warner, defeated the New England Patriots 24-17 Sunday night.  Warner completed 30 of 42 passes for 401 yards and 3 touchdowns, while Faulk rushed for 83 yards on 20 carries and caught 7 passes for 70 yards and a score.  WRs Isaac Bruce (130 yards receiving) and Torry Holt (89 yards and 1 touchdown) each had 7 receptions as well.  St. Louis is now 5-0 on the road in 2001 and has outscored its opponents 143-74 in those five games.  New EnglandWR Troy Brown caught 8 passes for 91 yards and CB Terrell Buckley intercepted his first pass for New England, returning it for a 52-yard touchdown.
