SUNDAY EARLY GAMES
Washington – Redskins RB Stephen Davis carried a career-high 38 times for 148 yards to finish with 1,432, topping the team mark of 1,405 he set two years ago.
Tennessee – The Bengals moved 54 yards in nine plays for the winning score. Bengals K Neil Rackers kicked a 34-yard field goal with 20 seconds remaining for the win. Bengals RB Corey Dillon had touchdown runs of two and 34 yards in the first quarter.
Detroit – Cowboys RB Emmitt Smith became the first running back to reach 1,000 yards in 11 straight seasons. Smith ran for 77 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries to finish his season with 1,021 yards and increase his career total to 16,187, behind only Walter Payton’s 16,726. Lions QB Ty Detmer was 24-of-40 for 242 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Lions WR Johnnie Morton caught eight passes for 86 yards and a touchdown.
Pittsburgh – Steelers RB Chris Fuamatu-Ma’afala rushed for 98 yards on 17 carries before leaving with a groin injury late in the third quarter. Steelers QB Kordell Stewart completed 8-of-16 passes for 72 yards. The NFL’s leading rusher among quarterbacks, Stewart also ran for 32 yards on four carries to go over the 500-yard mark.
Indianapolis – Colts QB Peyton Manning threw for 191 yards on 16-of-30 passing, becoming the third quarterback in NFL history to throw for 4,000 yards in three consecutive seasons (behind San Diego’s Dan Fouts and Miami’s Dan Marino). Indianapolis RB Dominic Rhodes had 31 carries for 141 yards and became the third rookie in team history to rush for 1,000 yards. Colts WR Marvin Harrison made nine catches for 128 yards. Indianapolis defensive end Chad Bratzke recorded three sacks. Denver Pro Bowl receiver Rod Smith collected 92 yards on seven catches.
NY Giants – Giants DE Michael Strahan set an NFL single-season sacks record with 22.5, bettering Mark Gastineau’s record of 22.0 sacks. Packers QB Brett Favre was 15-of-30 for 315 yards. Green Bay RB Ahman Green had 23 rushes for 101 yards. Giants QB Kerry Collins finished 36-of-59 for 386 yards.
Chicago – The Bears’ defense forced turnovers which led to 13 points. The Chicago win clinched Chicago’s first NFC Central Division title since 1990 and a first-round playoff bye. The 13 wins under coach Dick Jauron is the most for the Bears since they went 14-2 under Mike Ditka in 1986.
Carolina – The Patriots won their first division title since 1997. Patriots CB Ty Law an interception 46 yards for a touchdown and Patriots CB Otis Smith returned a third interception 76 yards for another score. Panthers RB Richard Huntley set a team record with 168 yards rushing.
New Orleans – 49ers QB Jeff Garcia threw four touchdown passes for the second time this season against New Orleans. Garcia completed 14 of 21 attempts for 263 yards.
SUNDAY LATE GAMES
St. Louis – Rams RB Marshall Faulk finished with 226 yards -- 168 yards on 20 carries and four catches for 58 yards -- becoming the first player in NFL history with four consecutive 2,000-yard seasons. Faulk also broke the team touchdown record with his 59th in three seasons, one more than Eric Dickerson had in five years with the team. St. Louis QB Kurt Warner finished the regular season with 18 touchdown passes and seven pickoffs in the last six games. He finished the game 25-for-30 for 280 yards and has had 4,830 yards passing this season, second only to Dan Marino’s 5,084-yard season in 1984. The Rams surpassed 500 points for the third straight season and outscored their opponents 503-274, by far the best point differential in the NFL.
Miami – Dolphins RB Lamar Smith rushed for 158 yards and a touchdown. Miami’s defense allowed only 13 yards in the first half and scored on the final play of the game when Dolphins DB Brock Marion returned an interception 100 yards.
Seattle – Seahawks QB Trent Dilfer completed 22 of 38 passes for 248 yards with two touchdowns. Seattle RB Shaun Alexander finished with 127 yards on 20 carries. It was Alexander’s fourth 100-yard rushing game in 12 starts filling in for the injured Ricky Watters. Chiefs RB Priest Holmes won the NFL rushing title with 1,555 yards, finishing ahead of Jets RB Curtis Martin, who had 1,505 yards. Holmes had 117 yards on 23 carries, breaking the franchise mark of 1,480 set by Christian Okoye in 1989.
Oakland - Jets K John Hall kicked a 53-yard field goal with 59 seconds left in the game to give the Jets a 24-22 victory. Jets QB Vinny Testaverde was 18-of-29 for 230 yards. Jets WR Laveranues Coles finished with five catches for 111 yards. Raiders QB Rich Gannon was 23-of-38 for 224 yards.
