NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE SUNDAY RESULTS

 

Each Sunday evening, the National Football League will e-mail scores, recaps and standings in order to assist you in your coverage of the 2001 regular season.  The e-mail will be sent at approximately 9:00 p.m. ET, following Sunday’s afternoon action.

Philadelphia—Arizona quarterback Jake Plummer led the Cardinals to his 13th career fourth-quarter game-winning comeback.  Plummer connected with wide receiver MarTay Jenkins on a 35-yard scoring pass with 9 seconds remaining to give Arizona the win.  Jenkins finished with 6 receptions for 119 yards.

Atlanta—The Bears’ defense forced 5 turnovers, including linebacker Brian Urlacher’s 90-yard fumble-return touchdown run.  Chicago wide receiver Marcus Robinson led the team with 9 receptions for 114 yards and a touchdown, while Bears wide receiver Marty Booker added a 63-yard touchdown catch and also threw for a score.

Pittsburgh—The Steelers opened up Heinz Field with a victory over their division rivals.  Pittsburgh running back Jerome Bettis rushed for 153 yards while going over the 10,000-yard mark for his career, the 14th NFL player to do so.  The Steelers scored on quarterback Kordell Stewart’s 8-yard touchdown run and 2 Kris Brown field goals.

New Orleans—The Saints’ defense recorded 6 sacks, recovered 2 fumbles, including one returned for a touchdown, and shut down the high-powered Minnesota offense.  New Orleans defensive linemen La’Roi Glover and Darren Howard each recorded 2.0 sacks while Saints safety Chris Oldham ran a fumble back 46 yards for a touchdown.  New Orleans running back Ricky Williams rushed for 136 yards and scored a touchdown.

Miami—The Miami defense held the Patriots to 150 total yards and shut out New England over the final 36 minutes.  Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor highlighted the defensive performance with a 1-yard fumble return touchdown.  On offense, Miami running back Lamar Smith rushed for 144 yards and a touchdown while Dolphins kicker Olindo Mare converted 3 field-goal attempts.

Cleveland—Browns quarterback Tim Couch tossed a 19-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Kevin Johnson with 1:19 remaining to put Cleveland in the lead for good.  The Browns improved to 3-1 and moved into a tie for first in the AFC Central while the Chargers dropped their first game of the season.

Baltimore— The Ravens’ defense held the Titans to 185 total yards while recording 3 sacks and 2 interceptions.  Baltimore quarterback Elvis Grbac passed for 259 yards and a touchdown, connecting with wide receiver Qadry Ismail on a 77-yard scoring strike.  Ravens running back Terry Allen rushed for 108 yards and a touchdown.

New York—Giants running back Damon Washington stepped in for injured running backs Ron Dayne and Tiki Barber and rushed for 90 yards on 25 carries.  New York wide receiver Amani Toomer had 7 catches for 97 yards and Giants tight end Dan Campbell hauled in a 1-yard touchdown pass.  New York cornerback Jason Sehorn added a 34-yard interception return for a touchdown, his second pick of the game.

Oakland— Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon completed 21 of 28 passes for 209 yards and Oakland running back Tyrone Wheatley rushed for 2 touchdowns.  Raiders wide receiver Tim Brown hauled in 7 passes for 114 yards and Oakland wide receiver Jerry Rice had a 5-yard TD reception.

Tampa Bay— Buccaneers running back Mike Alstott rushed for 77 yards, including a 39-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter for the game’s winning points.  Tampa Bay wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson had 9 catches for 82 yards as quarterback Brad Johnson connected on 23 of 29 attempts.

Seattle—Seahawks quarterback Trent Dilfer passed for 219 yards and a touchdown to lead Seattle to victory, his 12th consecutive win.  Seahawks running back Shaun Alexander rushed for 176 yards and 2 touchdowns while Seattle wide receiver Bobby Engran had 5 catches for 71 yards.

Denver—Broncos cornerback Deltha O’Neal tied an NFL record with 4 interceptions, becoming the 18th player to accomplish the feat.  Denver running back Mike Anderson rushed for 155 yards and Broncos wide receiver Rod Smith had 110 yards receiving to account for nearly 90 percent of Denver’s offense.

Buffalo—Jets running back Curtis Martin rushed for 135 yards and 2 touchdowns as New York improved to 2-0 on the road.  The Jets’ defense scored twice as defensive end John Abraham returned a fumble 7 yards for a touchdown and linebacker Mo Lewis scored from 15 yards out on a fumble recovery.  New York’s defense forced 5 turnovers on the day.

San Francisco - The San Francisco 49ers topped the Carolina Panthers 24-14 Sunday night behind the passing of QB Jeff Garcia.  Garcia, who completed 17 of 31 attempts for 212 yards and 2 touchdowns, also rushed for 20 yards and another score.  49ers WR Terrell Owens had 8 receptions for 118 yards and caught both Garcia touchdown passes, while RB Garrison Hearst contributed 74 yards rushing on 18 carries.  The victory marked the 49ers first-ever win against former San Francisco coach George Siefert and was their second prime-time victory in as many weeks (19-17 win over Jets last Monday night).
