GIANTS’ STRAHAN VIES TO SET NFL SACK RECORD
New York Giants defensive end MICHAEL STRAHAN leads the NFL with 21.5 sacks and needs one more this Sunday against Green Bay to break the NFL all-time single-season record held by former New York Jets defensive end MARK GASTINEAU (22.0 in 1984). Strahan’s sack total is the second most ever in a season since sacks became an official statistic in 1982. Strahan has already broken the Giants’ team sack record of 20.5 by LAWRENCE TAYLOR in 1986. He also set this year the NFL record for most sacks in a five-game span with 12.5 from Weeks 3-7. Strahan is the first player to record at least 20.0 sacks in a season since DERRICK THOMAS had 20.0 in 1990, and the first with at least 21.0 since CHRIS DOLEMAN’s 21.0 in 1989. Strahan has had three games with at least 3.0 sacks, including 3.5 last week against Philadelphia. He set a career-high with 4.0 sacks against St. Louis in Week 5. He has seven games with at least 1.5 sacks, and since beginning the season with two no-sack games, Strahan has been shut out only once, against Minnesota in Week 10.
