NFL TUESDAYS:

PLAYERS IN THE COMMUNITY ON THEIR DAYS OFF

The Thanksgiving holiday is much more than just family, food, friends and football, and NFL players are in the spirit of the season.  Around the league this Thanksgiving, NFL players, coaches, and owners and their families are giving back to their communities in a myriad of ways.

In Kansas City, TE TONY GONZALEZ, LB LEW BUSH and K TODD PETERSON and their respective foundations will provide Thanksgiving dinner to the residents of the Bridge Home for Children.  Atlanta native and Falcons WR TERANCE MATHIS is conducting his annual “Bird for a Bird” collection: fans who donate a turkey to the Atlanta Community Food Bank will receive tickets to a Falcons home game in December.  Residents at the Ida B. Wells Home in Chicago will have a special Thanksgiving delivery of 300 turkeys from Bears LB BRIAN URLACHER, while Colts owner JIM IRSAY and a number of Colts players will serve Thanksgiving dinner at a homeless shelter in Indianapolis.

In the 2001 season, the NFL highlights these day-off community endeavors with a program entitled “NFL Tuesdays.”  The program raises awareness, both locally and nationally, about the day-off charitable work of NFL players and coaches.

“For years, NFL players and coaches have been working extensively in their communities on their day off,” says NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue.  “While many of us use our two-day weekend to relax, countless NFL players and coaches use their one day off during the season to give back to their communities.  It’s time players received more credit for that.”

Every week, the NFL gathers information from its clubs about player and coach activities scheduled for the upcoming Tuesday.  The information then will be distributed to media and fans.

Following are some of the activities players and coaches will be participating in this Thanksgiving:
