NFL TUESDAYS:

PLAYERS IN THE COMMUNITY ON THEIR DAYS OFF

NFL players will go back to school on Tuesday, Oct. 23.  One high school in every NFL city has won an NFL player visit as part of NFL High School Tuesday through the NFLHS.com Player Visit Contest.

In cooperation with the NFL and the NFL Players Association, players from all 31 NFL clubs as well as Houston Texans’ Head Coach DOM CAPERS will visit local high schools. Students entered their high schools for an NFL player visit at NFLHS.com, the NFL’s official high school football web site.

New York Giants wide receiver AMANI TOOMER will visit the Stuyvesant High School football team. Stuyvesant High School is located in lower Manhattan, a few blocks from the site of the World Trade Center attacks. Other players making high school visits include punter MITCH BERGER of the Minnesota Vikings, St. Louis Rams running back TRUNG CANIDATE, Buffalo Bills defensive end PHIL HANSEN, Cleveland Browns linebacker WALI RAINER, and quarterback ANTHONY WRIGHT of the Dallas Cowboys.

NFL players will meet with students to share their own high school experiences and discuss how those years helped shape them into adults.

In the 2001 season, the NFL will highlight these day-off community endeavors with a program entitled “NFL Tuesdays.”  The program is designed to raise awareness, both locally and nationally, about the day-off charitable work of NFL players and coaches.

“For years, NFL players and coaches have been working extensively in their communities on their day off,” says NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue.  “While many of us use our two-day weekend to relax, countless NFL players and coaches use their one day off during the season to give back to their communities.  It’s time players received more credit for that.”

Every week, the NFL will gather information from its clubs about player and coach activities scheduled for the upcoming Tuesday.  The information then will be distributed to media and fans.

Following are some of the activities players and coaches will be participating in this October 16 (for a complete list log on to NFL.com):
