NFL TUESDAYS:
PLAYERS IN THE COMMUNITY ON THEIR DAY OFF

REDSKINS DEDICATE NEW FOOTBALL FIELD; CHARGERS WORK IN SHOE STORE; STEELERS PLAYERS HOST A LUNCHEON FOR KIDS

This Tuesday, Redskins quarterback PATRICK RAMSEY will join Redskins Owner DANIEL SNYDER and Washington Post Chairman and CEO DONALD GRAHAM to dedicate a newly renovated football field at Central High School in Capitol Heights, Maryland. After the field dedication, Ramsey will christen the field by hosting a football clinic with members of the Central High School football team.  The field was funded through the partnership between the Washington Redskins Leadership Council, he Washington Post and the Philip L. Graham Fund.

The entire SAN DIEGO CHARGERS team will work at five area Payless Shoe stores for the team’s annual “Back to School Shoe Distribution” program.  All players will distribute more than 1,000 pairs of shoes to needy elementary school students.

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver HINES WARD and tight end MARK BRUENER are co-chairs of the “Caring Program for Children” Kickoff Luncheon at Heinz Field.  The program provides health insurance to uninsured children as well as funding the Caring Place, a center for children, adolescents and their families who have lost a loved one.   The program is funded in large part by students who raise money to help their peers.  Many of these students will attend this luncheon to kick off their fundraising season.

These are just a few of the many community service activities taking place as part of “NFL Tuesdays.”

Tuesday is the traditional day off for NFL players during the season.  It is the day players escape the rigors of pro football and get reacquainted with rest and relaxation.  But many players also use their day off to “go to work” in their communities.

The NFL highlights these day-off community endeavors with a program entitled “NFL Tuesdays.” The program is designed to raise awareness, both locally and nationally, about the day-off charitable work of NFL players and coaches.

“For years, NFL players and coaches have been working extensively in their communities on their day off,” says NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue.  “While many of us use our two-day weekend to relax, countless NFL players and coaches use their one day off during the season to give back to their communities.  It’s time players received more credit for that.”
