NFL Teams Bring Football Fields to their Communities; Buccaneers Give Support to the Military;  Lions Serve Dinner For a Good Cause

This Tuesday, ATLANTA FALCONS owner & CEO ARTHUR BLANK, Falcons defensive end and United Way spokesperson PATRICK KERNEY and Atlanta Mayor SHIRLEY FRANKLIN will participate in a groundbreaking ceremony for field renovations at Central Park in downtown Atlanta. The renovation funds for the football fields were secured through a grant from the Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation and the United Way.

Defensive tackle BRYAN ROBINSON and defensive end PHILIP DANIELS will represent the CHICAGO BEARS, along with Chicago community leaders and Local Initiatives Support Corporation/Chicago (LISC/C) for the ribbon cutting, kickoff and inaugural game at a recently renovated football field located at the New City YMCA in Chicago. More than 100 children from neighboring communities will join in the celebration and play football with Bears players coaching. The New City YMCA received a grant for the field from the NFL through the Grassroots program coaching, with support and management provided by LISC/C.

TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS safety JOHN LYNCH will sign a Statement of Support for the National Guard and Military Reserve on behalf of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at MacDill Air Force Base.

The DETROIT LIONS ROOKIE CLUB will serve as celebrity waiters at the “Celebrities for Cystic Fibrosis” fundraiser being held in The Hall of Legends at Ford Field on Monday, November 2.  The Lions rookies, along with several Lions, NFL Alumni

And other local celebrities will serve as celebrity waiters, competing against each other as well as other celebrity waiters to earn the most tips of the evening. All proceeds will benefit Cystic Fibrosis research.

These are just a few of the many community service activities taking place as part of "NFL Tuesdays."

Tuesday is the traditional day off for NFL players during the season. It is the day players escape the rigors of pro football and get reacquainted with rest and relaxation. But many players also use their day off to "go to work" in their communities.

The NFL highlights these day-off community endeavors with a program entitled "NFL Tuesdays." The program is designed to raise awareness, both locally and nationally, about the day-off charitable work of NFL players and coaches.

"For years, NFL players and coaches have been working extensively in their communities on their day off," says NFL Commissioner PAUL TAGLIABUE. "While many of us use our two-day weekend to relax, countless NFL players and coaches use their one day off during the season to give back to their communities. It’s time players received more credit for that."

Kerney, the Falcons United Way spokesperson, will participate alongside Falcons owner & CEO Arthur Blank and Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin in a groundbreaking ceremony for field renovations at Central Park in downtown Atlanta. Brentson will have the opportunity to teach elementary and middle school students at St. Michael's Catholic School important lessons both on and off the field. The topics he will discuss include the importance of teambuilding and leadership.

Chicago Bears

Each Tuesday during the football season, Bears players visit Chicago Public Schools to speak to, motivate, and interact with students. Players will visit Herbert School, Irving Park Middle School and South Loop Elementary. The theme for player visits is character development, goal setting, and commitment to excellence. More than 7,000 students benefit annually from this program.

The Chicago Bears will kick off the 15th Annual Chicago Bears Coat Drive at Halas Hall with player spokesmen. New or gently used coats will be donated to needy families during the holiday season. Donations will benefit The Salvation Army and public schools in the greater Chicagoland area. Coats can be dropped off at all Sears stores and Salvation Army locations in Illinois and at the Bears vs. Cardinals game on November 30 at Soldier Field. The coat drive, sponsored by Sears, will run through January 15.

The players will speak with the Tiger Cubs for the Boys Scouts of America about their professional football careers. They will also participate in games and activities with the Boy Scouts.

Players will visit a local juvenile facility to speak on topics of purpose and career on behalf of the Abstinence Education Network of Greater Cincinnati.

Holcomb will attend the “Outstanding Achievers” luncheon to recognize and congratulate top students in the Outback Road Trip with the Browns program. Outback Road Trip with the Browns is an educational program designed for 6th graders to enhance written communication and research skills with a focus on geography and language arts, as well as encourage education through a fun and innovative program.

Henry and Sanders will visit Central Intermediate School in Wadsworth as part of the Giant Eagle Jr. Training Table program. The Giant Eagle Jr. Training Table is a unique health and fitness program the Browns bring to area schools. This year, Central Intermediate beat out 600 other schools to win a presentation of the Giant Eagle Jr. Training table and visit by Browns players by completing and submitting an application.

Carter will participate in his second “Time Out Tuesday” visit to John H. Regan Elementary School (Dallas Public Schools). Carter aims to help tackle illiteracy and share the joy of reading with seventy-five 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students. As a part of “Time Out Tuesdays,” a reading initiative he began in 2002, Carter spends time reading to the students and sharing his opinions on why reading is an important tool in his life today. “Time Out Tuesday” takes place in an elementary school on designated Tuesdays during the football season.

Gold and some of his teammates will visit, read, and play games with members of the Denver Broncos Boys and Girls Club.

Allen and Thornton will participate in the Colts/Vectren Power Volunteer Day in Muncie. They will work with the volunteers at both the Boys and Girls Club of Muncie painting, refurbishing the building and with the Motivate our Minds program by helping kids with their homework and tutoring in reading and math.

The I.M. Sulzbacher Center for the Homeless will be unveiling its holiday card “Nights of Shelter” billboard at the center. Bryant, currently serving as spokesperson for the center, will be in attendance to show his support of the program designed to help raise awareness for the homeless shelter. Anthony Nelson, 15 year-old designer of the 2003 Holiday Card will also be in attendance. A local billboard company has donated several billboard spots around town where Anthony's card will be on display.

Ayodele will tape a public service announcement encouraging people to not use tobacco products as part of the Anti-Tobacco program for Baptist Medical Center.

Hall will visit Central Middle School in Kansas City to launch a new youth fitness program, "Kansas City Step With It!"  Already in place in other cities throughout the nation, the program challenges children to take 10,000 steps a day. The program was designed by several youth fitness organizations and is sponsored by Coca-Cola.

Gonzalez will be joined by Carol Vermeil at a metro-Kansas City elementary school on behalf of the Shadow Buddies Foundation. Gonzales, the spokesperson for this organization that offers condition specific dolls to allow those inflicted with illness to have a "friend" that shares the same condition, will "reintroduce" a third grade student who is suffering from cancer back to his school. Gonzalez's visit will help show those classmates that cancer isn't something to be afraid and of it they should not treat anyone differently.

Dhani Jones will be at Madison Square Garden on Monday (11/2) to receive the Starlight Shining Star Award from the Starlight Children's Foundation at their annual Celebrity Sports Auction. The award is given in recognition of a player who goes above and beyond to perform numerous charitable works with children in the New York Metropolitan area. Barber and Strahan will also be in attendance to support the charity with which they are both highly involved.

Hatch will visit Butler High School (Butler, NJ) to join the Butler Bulldogs youth football program for practice. He will help coach seventy five 1st through 8th graders in the fundamental aspects of football and encourage them to work as hard in the classroom as they do on the football field.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society will honor Pennington as the New York Athlete of the Year at their annual Dinner with Champions. Dinner with Champions is one of the premiere charitable events of the New York sports scene. It attracts approximately 300 guests and many current and retired athletes from New York Teams including the Jets, Yankees, Mets, Knicks and Rangers. To date, the event has raised more than $1 million to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The event creates public awareness about blood-related cancers and their devastating effects on families and raises funds for the ongoing work of the NYC chapter.

Jones will attend the Starlight Foundation's 14th Annual Celebrity Sports Auction. The mission of the Starlight Children’s Foundation is to brighten the lives of seriously ill children.

The Muscular Dystrophy Association's Muscle Team is a high profile gala and auction held in early January where metro New York’s top professional athletes help MDA raise funds to find a cure for neuromuscular diseases. On November 3rd at the Muscle Team Kickoff Event the athletes will be introduced to their MDA Buddies. The Jets defensive line will attend this event. In addition to attending the event the defensive line has participated in a performance based donation to benefit MDA. For every sack during the 2003 season the defensive line will donate $200 and the Jets will match their donation. As of game 7, $10,400 has been raised.

Gbaja-Biamila and rookie defensive end Sam Williams will speak at Castlemont High School in East Oakland. Gbaja-Biamila, who played high school football at Crenshaw in Los Angeles, and Williams, who played at Claymont in Concord, will address the Castlemont varsity football team. Castlemont High is well known for its “College Prep Small Learning Communities” curriculum and serves over 1800 students from various ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds

As part of the Rams Reader Team, Thomas will read at Orchard Farms Elementary. The Rams Reader Team, a program that targets kids from kindergarten to high school, encourages young readers to visit their local library, sign up to be a Rams Reader Team member, and choose a book from the reading list created from suggestions from the Rams players, head coach and owner. After registering to become a member of the Rams Reader Team, members will receive a reading list. After reading books, members will receive a full-color poster that includes the reading list on the back as well as a bookmark and a magnet and be registered to win tickets to a Rams' home game and a party at Rams Park.
