JOCKEYING FOR PLAYOFFS BEGINS

If this is the way the rest of the season is going to go, get ready for some raucous holidays!

As the NFL began the second half of its 2004 season last weekend, some wild things happened, some "struggling" teams were no longer struggling, and fans started to grab for their standings sheets because, with Thanksgiving on the way, playoff jockeying is about the begin in earnest.

"This is the time of year when you start to have fun," says a man who knows about the type of fun the NFL dishes out in November and December, New England Patriots quarterback TOM BRADY.

Of course, the most fun is winning. Add to that the way some teams won last week, and the excitement is starting to ratchet up.

Three games ended at 17-17 in regulation, the first time in history that has happened. Jacksonville forced overtime when EDDIE DRUMMOND returned two punts for scores in the fourth quarter. One of the OT games was decided on a safety, only the second time that has happened. The Rams started their game blazing, throwing 13 consecutive passes before their first rush. Peyton Manning threw his "usual" five TD passes. Drew Bledsoe was intercepted by a guy he had thrown 12 TD passes to in his career, TROY BROWN. KORDELL STEWART, who had not punted since high school, did so five times and finished with a respectable 35.4-yard average.

Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh Steelers – the hottest team in football with seven wins in a row – are led by an unassuming rookie quarterback, BEN ROETHLISBERGER, who not only has set a rookie record since 1970 for most consecutive wins to start a season (7), but has chefs all over town creating the ultimate "Ben Burger" or "Roethlisberger."

So, as things are starting to cook up in the NFL, here are some of the highlight games of Week 11:

PITTSBURGH STEELERS (8-1) at CINCINNATI BENGALS (4-5): The Miami of Ohio wunderkind completes his tour of Ohio. Last week, it was a 27-10 victory over the Cleveland Browns for Steelers rookie QB BEN ROETHLISBERGER. This week, it’s down Highway 71 to Cincinnati to meet the suddenly hot Bengals, winners of three of their last four, in another AFC North battle. Counting his last 13 victories at Miami of Ohio last season, Roethlisberger takes a 20-game win steak into Sunday’s game against Cincy.

Pittsburgh – off to its best start since 1978 (9-1) -- presents Cincinnati with a formidable challenge. Gang up on Roethlisberger to prevent his passes to the likes of HINES WARD or PLAXICO BURRESS, and you leave the chance of holes for the Steelers’ short-yardage king who is now more than that – JEROME BETTIS. In the past two games, replacing an injured DUCE STALEY, the 21-year veteran has rumbled for 252 yards and two TDs.

The Bengals? They come off a five-sack, three-interception win over Washington. They came within 5:46 of their first shutout since 1989. "We play in one of the toughest divisions in football," says head coach MARVIN LEWIS. "We keep showing that every time we go outside our division."

Matchup to watch: Roethlisberger against nine-year CB TORY JAMES, whose six pickoffs lead the NFL.

INDIANAPOLIS COLTS (6-3) at CHICAGO BEARS (4-5): A hot quarterback vs. a hot team. And the hot team’s

QB isn’t doing badly either!

Four weeks ago, the Bears were on a four-game losing streak and sinking in the NFC North. Now, behind rookie

NFL FACTOID

"FAVRE" DEBUTS: This Sunday (November 21), Favre, a biography written by the mother of the Green Bay Packers’ quarterback, BONITA; and CHRIS HAVEL of the Green Bay Press-Gazette, will debut in the 33rd spot on the New York Times’ non-fiction best-seller list. That night, The Packers play in Houston on ESPN.

quarterback CRAIG KRENZEL, they have won their past three and sit tied for second place one game behind Green Bay and Minnesota.

Chicago has allowed the NFC’s fourth fewest points this year (159), and even the Bears’ four consecutive losses were by a slim 7.5-point margin.

"Our defense is playing as well, if not better, than any defense in the league right now," says Krenzel.

The Bears’ No. 12 pass defense will be tested by perhaps the NFL’s hottest quarterback, PEYTON MANNING. On pace to break DAN MARINO’s NFL season record of TD passes (48) with 55, Manning last week tied the NFL season record for most five-TD games (3).

Matchup to watch: The scheming that will go on between Colts offensive coordinator TOM MOORE and former Bears linebacker/now defensive coordinator RON RIVERA.

DENVER BRONCOS (6-3) at NEW ORLEANS SAINTS (4-5): "To everybody that said ‘goodbye’ to us, we’re not done yet," says Saints receiver JOE HORN.

And, indeed, the Saints do have the ability to bounce back time and again. After a three-game losing streak in early October, they have won two of the past three. The most recent was last Sunday when they did not exactly stymie the volatile Kansas City offense (497 yards), but played opportunistic, gritty football by winning the takeaway battle 3-1, came back from an early 10-point deficit, and scored late to win.

The Broncos come off a bye tied in the AFC West with the second-highest-scoring team in the NFL, the San Diego Chargers (262). They look to a rested running back REUBEN DROUGHNS – averaging 129.6 yards per game in his past five outings – to pick up his pre-bye dominance. Droughn’s strong leg drive after initial contact with tacklers has enabled him to get much of his yardage.

Matchup to watch: Horn vs. another talker, Broncos CB CHAMP BAILEY, who has not missed a game in his six-year career.

ATLANTA FALCONS (7-2) at NEW YORK GIANTS (5-4): Eli’s coming! Michael, too. Should be quite a day at Giants Stadium.

The Giants, 4-1 through October 10, have lost three of their last four, and have decided to start the "future" of the franchise, as he has been called, quarterback ELI MANING, the NFL’s No. 1 overall draft choice of this season.

Manning, brother of the Colts’ Peyton (the teams do not play this year), is excited about his first professional start. ""This is something I want to do," he says. "This is what I want to do for a living. This is why I want to play football, so I can go out there and be the starting quarterback."

Manning does not take over a weak club by any means. The Giants boast the NFL’s leader in scrimmage yards, TIKI BARBER (1,391), who ties for the third-most touchdowns in the league (10).

Manning will be facing another No. 1 overall NFL draft choice (2001) who knows what it is like to be in the spotlight, quarterback MICHAEL VICK.

The Falcons have won three of their past four by combining the explosive talents of Vick; the sure hands of tight end ALGE CRUMPLER (118 yards), the team’s leading receiver (35 catches); and a solid rush defense (rated No. 4 in the league) that helped contribute a team season-high seven sacks last week against Tampa Bay.

Matchup to watch: Falcons LDE PATRICK KERNEY, with 8.0 sacks, against Giants RT DAVID DIEHL.

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (8-1) at KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (3-6) (Monday, ABC, 9:00 PM ET): The Chiefs are ready for their push! All they have to do is look at the NFL records since 1990 to see that all is far from lost after a nine-game record of 4-5 or worse. In that time, 13 teams have begun the season with similar marks and still made the playoffs, including the 4-5 Green Bay Packers last year, and three teams have advanced to the postseason after starting the season with a 3-6 mark, including the 1996 Jacksonville Jaguars, who advanced to the AFC Championship Game. "That’s why we play this game," says Chiefs tight end TONY GONZALES. "To win football games. To go to the playoffs."

The Patriots have picked up after their "blip" on October 31 of finally losing after 21 consecutive victories, and have won their past two by an un-Patriot-like almost three-TD margin (20.5).

The Chiefs’ defense will try to prevent New England running back COREY DILLON (151 yards last week) from getting rolling. He has four consecutive 100-yard rushing games in a row.
