TURKEY & TIEBREAKERS. ’TIS THE SEASON!

The turkeys are ready…and so are the Eagles!

It’s going to be one exciting NFL weekend starting this Thursday. Before it’s all over, there will be some stuffed Thanksgiving bellies, a slew of always exciting NFL games, and perhaps 2004’s first division champion.

The NFL with all its trimmings starts with its traditional nationally televised Thanksgiving Day doubleheader, this year featuring the INDIANAPOLIS COLTS at the DETROIT LIONS on CBS at 12:30 PM ET, and the CHICAGO BEARS at the DALLAS COWBOYS on FOX at 4:35 PM ET.

In addition to the "Throwback Classics" uniforms the four Thanksgiving Day teams will wear, there will be some "throwback" Thanksgiving anniversaries saluted on Thursday.

It will be 70 years since the Lions played their first Thanksgiving Day game, on November 29, 1934 (a 19-16 loss to the Chicago Bears) that basically started the NFL’s modern-day Thanksgiving tradition. It is also the 70th anniversary of the first NFL network radio broadcast (94 stations coast-to-coast) on that day, featuring the legendary GRAHAM MC NAMEE and DON WILSON. Finally, this Thanksgiving will mark the 75th anniversary of the oldest record in NFL annals – the Chicago Cardinals’ ERNIE NEVERS’ six-touchdown, 40-point performance on the holiday in 1929 against the Bears.

On top of all those memories will be the vintage uniforms worn by the four Thanksgiving teams -- the Colts of 1956, Lions of 1935-48, Bears of 1946 and Cowboys of 1962. "It’s going to be sweet to go back to the 1956 jersey," says Colts tight end MARCUS POLLARD. "That’s what Thanksgiving is all about. Detroit will be in throwback. We’ll be in throwback."

But enough nostalgia! The here-and-now concerns every NFL team as December beckons – especially the 9-1 Philadelphia Eagles. With a win this Sunday against the Giants in New York, Philly can clinch its fourth division title in a row, and become only the third team since the 16-game schedule began in 1978 to win a division title by its 11th game (1985 Chicago Bears and 1997 San Francisco 49ers).

"The Eagles have been dominating this division," says Washington head coach JOE GIBBS. "They’re well-coached, well-balanced and their quarterback (DONOVAN MC NABB) is phenomenal."

Some highlight games of Thanksgiving week:

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (9-1) at NEW YORK GIANTS (5-5): Eli gets his first taste of a big NFC East rivalry.

And the Giants’ new starting quarterback ELI MANNING ("He’s going to be just like his brother PEYTON in due time," says Atlanta’s MICHAEL VICK) will face a pick-your-poison defense. Philly ties for second in the NFL in take/gives with a plus-11 margin; ties for the third-most sacks in the league (29); has a DL lead by JEVON KEARSE with 7.0 sacks; and a backfield keyed by cornerback LITO SHEPPARD, who tops the NFL with two interception-TD runbacks.

Manning knows that in his second NFL start he will have to be sharp from the get-go. "(My first start) helped me get the speed of the game back," he says. "Going against a tough Philly team with a good pass rush, I’ve got to stay with that rhythm and find that earlier in the game this week."

The Giants’ eighth-ranked NFL defense will have their hands full with Philly, which is 9-1 for the first time since 1980. McNabb – fresh off a career-high-tying four-TD pass game – is third in the league in touchdown passes

NFL THANKSGIVING FACTOID

TURKEY & PIGSKIN, WHAT ELSE?: In an ESPN Sports Poll that asked people which sport they most associated with a particular holiday, the highest number of respondents – 42 percent – chose the NFL when it came to Thanksgiving.

******************************************************************************************************************************************

(22), and throws to the NFL’s leading TD catcher (13), TERRELL OWENS.

"Owens is a guy that can stretch the defense," says injured Giants safety SHAUN WILIAMS. "He’s a big-play guy. He can change the game around in one play.

BALTIMORE RAVENS (7-3) at NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (9-1): The NFL’s stingiest defense against – somewhat surprisingly – the league’s tied-for-fifth most productive offense.

Sure, everybody knows RAY LEWIS, TERRELL SUGGS and ED REED of Baltimore’s ferocious defense, which ranks third in the NFL and has surrendered the league’s fewest points (140).

But that "D" will have to contend with a "blue collar" team that built its 21-game win streak largely on close victories but as of late has been a "scoring machine," averaging 32.0 points since their streak-breaking loss on October 31 with a 16.3-point winning margin in their past three games.

Of course, the generator of the Patriots’ prowess is quarterback TOM BRADY, the unquestioned leader of the team and the cover subject of a recent Men’s Journal survey that proclaimed he was the epitome of the "Best Job In America – NFL Quarterback." "He just carries himself so well," says Kansas City linebacker SCOTT FUJITA. "He sees defenses real well."

In this northeast weather, the game could turn on the running backs. The Pats’ COREY DILLON has rushed for more yards – 998 – than any New England RB ever did in his first 10 games with the team. Ravens starter JAMAL LEWIS (ankle) may not be available, so CHESTER TAYLOR would start. "Our mantra has been, the next man’s got to step up," says Baltimore head coach BRIAN BILLICK.

JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS (6-4) at MINNESOTA VIKINGS (6-4): Guess who’s back?

Looks like two key performers will return for both teams just as the playoff push begins in earnest. For Minnesota, wide receiver RANDY MOSS (hamstring) is expected to return after missing three games. Head coach MIKE TICE plans to use him in three-receiver sets to lessen Moss’ burden.

For the Jaguars, inspirational quarterback BYRON LEFTWICH (knee sprain) feels ready to return after missing the past two games. All five games the Jags won under Leftwich in their 5-2 start were decided in the final minute.

The returns should immeasurably help both teams. The Vikings are tied with Green Bay for the NFC North lead. The Jaguars sit one game behind AFC North-leader Indianapolis.

Of course, Moss or no Moss, the burden of Jacksonville head coach JACK DEL RIO is to devise a shut-down scheme for Vikings quarterback DAUNTE CULPEPPER, who has the NFL’s top completion percentage (70.3) and second-most TDs (27).

Interesting note: Head coaches Tice (14 years) and Del Rio (11) played the most seasons in the NFL of any of the league’s head coaches.

ST. LOUIS RAMS (5-5) at GREEN BAY PACKERS (6-4) (Monday, ABC, 9:00 PM ET): Brett goes for 200!

That’s 200 consecutive starts, through bad weather, injuries, personal crises, and just the intense week-in and week-out pressure of the NFL. No NFL quarterback has approached that number, as have few players at any position. Although NFL records are inexact on the subject, such consecutive-start bulwarks as JIM MARSHALL (270 games), MIKE TINGLEHOFF (240) and BRUCE MATTHEWS (229) outdistance Favre, but not by much.

But the number that pleases Favre and the Packers the most is "5," as in their five-game win streak after a 1-4 start. That last one came Sunday night when Favre engineered his 32nd fourth-quarter comeback (10 points) to position the Pack for a no-time-left winning field goal over Houston.

But when it comes to the Rams, Favre has not always been his marvelous self. In the past two meetings between the teams (both GB losses), he has been intercepted seven times (including an NFL playoff record-tying six times in a 2001 Divisional Playoff).

His counterpart, the unflappable MARC BULGER, throws to one of the game’s most dangerous receivers, TORRY HOLT, who has had more receiving yards since 2000 than any other NFL receiver (6,720).
