FOUR DIVISIONS CAN BE CLINCHED;
THREE TEAMS & MANNING GO FOR RECORDS

It’s the final quarter of the regular season. Let the bedlam – and record-chasing -- begin!

This week, with four games to go, three clubs can make NFL history, as can one player.

The teams are the 11-1 New England Patriots, Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers. Only once before in NFL history have three clubs had 11-1 or better records (1984; 11-1 Denver, Miami and San Francisco). Three teams have never been 12-1 or better. You’ve got something to shoot for, guys, in addition to division titles and playoff improvement.

The player record? When the Indianapolis Colts and their prolific passer PEYTON MANNING play at Houston this week, if the quarterback does what he has already accomplished four times this year, a record some thought unbreakable will be toppled.

With five touchdown passes – he has thrown at least that many in a game six times in his career, including four times this season – Manning will break the single-season TD pass record of 48 set by Miami’s DAN MARINO in 1984. With 44 TDs so far this season, Manning is tied with Marino (1986) for the second highest number of TD passes.

Meanwhile this week, there are division titles, playoff berths and playoff placements to be earned, with 29 teams in the hunt for Super Bowl XXXIX.

"If you get in the tournament, anything can happen," says defensive end JULIUS PEPPERS of the Carolina Panthers, who have won four straight games.

History proves that this is the best time of the season for "anything happening." In eight of the past 10 seasons, at least one team with a 6-6 or lower record at this point in the season has advanced to the playoffs, including the 6-6 Green Bay Packers last year. Since 1990, three teams with 5-7 records made the playoffs (1990 New Orleans, 1995 San Diego and 1996 Jacksonville).

"You just have to keep winning," says head coach HERMAN EDWARDS of the New York Jets, who have done just that in their past three games. "There’s no secret to this. If you win, you don’t have to look at the scoreboard."

What winning can accomplish in Week 14:

ATLANTA FALCONS can clinch the NFC South Division with a win or tie, or with Tampa Bay and Carolina losses or ties.

INDIANAPOLIS COLTS can take the AFC South with a win, or a tie and a Jacksonville loss or tie.

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS can earn the AFC East title with a win and a New York Jets loss. The Patriots clinch a playoff berth with a win or tie, or a Baltimore loss or tie, Denver loss or tie, or Pittsburgh win or tie.

NEW YORK JETS can clinch a playoff spot with a win, and a Buffalo loss or tie, Denver loss and San Diego win or tie. The Jets can also clinch a playoff berth with a win and a Buffalo loss or tie, Denver loss and Baltimore win or tie.

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES, who have taken the NFC East Division, can earn a first-round bye with a win or tie

NFL FACTOID

HIGH-SCORING WEEK: A total of 788 points were scored in Week 13, tying the all-time mark for a weekend of September 5, 8-9, 2002 (Week 1). Games averaged nearly 50.0 points – tying the 49.3 points of Week 1 in 2002. NFL games are averaging 42.8 points, the third-highest rate since 2002 and 1987 (both 43.7).

Sunday night at Washington (ESPN, 8:30 PM ET), or a Green Bay loss or tie, or an Atlanta win or tie.

PITTSBURGH STEELERS can clinch the AFC North Division with a win or tie, or a Baltimore loss or tie. The Steelers earn a playoff spot with a Denver loss or tie.

Some of the key playoff-implication games of Week 14:

NEW YORK JETS (9-3) at PITTSBURGH STEELERS (11-1): In addition to the playoff possibilities for both teams, the game offers other interesting scenarios.

Jets NFL rushing leader CURTIS MARTIN (1,305 yards) returns to his hometown, where he went to the University of Pittsburgh.

For the second week in a row, Steelers rookie BEN ROETHLISBERGER (a former MAC quarterback with Miami of Ohio) will face a MAC/Marshall QB in the Jets’ CHAD PENNINGTON (following Jacksonville’s BYRON LEFTWICH). Pennington confronts the NFL’s No. 1 defense (Jets are sixth). The teams rank second (Jets, +15) and fourth (Steelers, +12, tie) in turnover differential.

CINCINNATI BENGALS (6-6) at NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (11-1): Hello, Corey!

The Bengals meet their all-time rushing leader, COREY DILLON (8,061 yards from 1997-03), who they traded to the Pats last offseason. Dillon has run for 100 yards in seven games this year, ranking third (1,221) in the AFC in rushing, right in front of Cincy’s RUDI JOHNSON (1,105).

Cincinnati – which faces a club that has won 26 of its past 27 games – showed resiliency last week with a 17-point comeback victory over Baltimore’s tough defense. Bengals quarterback CARSON PALMER – who threw for 200 yards and three TDs in the fourth quarter – will test the Patriots’ ninth-ranked AFC pass defense. Palmer leads the conference in attempts with 408.

INDIANAPOLIS COLTS (9-3) at HOUSTON TEXANS (5-7): The last time these two division rivals met (November 14 in a 49-14 Indy win), Peyton Manning had one of his five-touchdown games. The Texans aren’t interested in helping him breaking Marino’s record this week, and a wily ol’ veteran thinks he knows the best approach to prohibiting it – stick to your assignments!

"When you start out trying to stop people from breaking records, that’s when you don’t play your game," says Texans safety MARCUS COLEMAN, a nine-year vet. "You take yourself out of position and do stupid things."

Indy can become the first NFL team to score 40 points in five consecutive games. The streak began against the Texans – the only time Houston has surrendered 40 this year.

ST.LOUIS RAMS (6-6) at CAROLINA PANTHERS (5-7): "There’s a lot of football left," says Panthers head coach JOHN FOX.

After the 2003 NFC champions started the year 1-7, the Panthers have won their past four and believe they are back in the Wild Card race. Quarterback JAKE DELHOMME is regaining his ’03 magic, and speed-merchant DE Julius Peppers is disrupting opposing teams. He is tied for fourth in the NFC with 9.0 sacks, has two interceptions (one for a TD), and even lined up as a wide receiver last week.

The Rams are tied with Seattle for the NFC West lead. "As long as you can stay atop the division by the end of the season, you’re ready to move to the next step," says head coach MIKE MARTZ.

St. Louis will start 17-year veteran quarterback CHRIS CHANDLER in place of injured MARC BULGER (shoulder). Chandler guided the Rams to a 16-6 win over the 49ers in Week 13. The Rams also hope first-round rookie running back STEVEN JACKSON (knee) will be fit. He comes off a 26-carry, 119-yard performance.

SEATTLE SEAHAWKS (6-6) at MINNESOTA VIKINGS (7-5): For two teams tied for division leads coming off losses, it’s time to get back on track.

You know Seattle defensive coordinator RAY RHODES will be heavily scheming against quarterback DAUNTE CULPEPPER. The NFL’s third-ranked passer (109.6) comes off a three-interception game against Chicago after throwing only seven this year. "That’s how the game goes sometimes," he says.

Rhodes’ unit leads the league with 19 interceptions and is No. 2 in total takeaways (30).

Minnesota’s defense – with four starters on the front seven with three or fewer years of experience – will gear up for the league’s No. 2 rusher, SHAUN ALEXANDER (1,273), who comes off his 18th career two-TD game.
