PATS GO FOR WIN-STREAK TIE;

UNDEFEATED FALCONS & JAGUARS IN DIVISION TUSSLES

2-0…3-0…and 17-0.  Those are the streaks on the line this week.

Who is 17-0 as the NFL reaches only the quarter-point of its season?  The New England Patriots, who last lost a year ago – in Week 4 of last year.  Starting with an October 5 victory over Tennessee, the Pats have won their last 12 regular season games, two playoff games, Super Bowl XXXVIII, and their first two games this year.  That is -- phew! -- 17 wins in a row, one behind tying five teams for the most consecutive wins in history (regular and postseason).

So this is a meaningful week, right Coach?  “What streak?” says Patriots head coach BILL BELICHICK, not surprisingly.  “We’re just trying to win a game.”  New England will try to win that game and tie that “What Steak?” this Sunday in Buffalo against their former quarterback DREW BLEDSOE:

Meanwhile this week, four other teams will be looking to extend streaks not as lengthy as the Patriots, but just as important.  Atlanta, Jacksonville and Philadelphia will be seeking 4-0 starts and the New York Jets a 3-0 record.

And for those clubs on the losing side of the ledger in ’04?  They should look no further than last year’s St. Louis Rams, who lost two of their first three games and then won 11 of their next 13 for a 12-4 mark that won them the NFC West title.

It’s a long season.  “You’ve got to be better this week than last week,” says Jaguars head coach JACK DEL RIO.

Some of the key games in “this week”:

  • INDIANAPOLIS COLTS (2-1) at JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS (3-0):  The Jaguars have scored 35 points the whole season (the fewest any 3-0 team has had since 1970).  The Colts rang up that many in the first half last week.  Yet, look who’s on top of the AFC South!

This division matchup is an interesting one indeed.  Pure offense vs. pure defense.  Indianapolis has tallied the most points in the NFL (100).  Jacksonville has allowed the third-fewest in the league (28).  “This is a blue-collar group,” says former linebacker Del Rio.  “We’re going to be steady.”

The Jags will have to be against the Colts.  Sunday, behind quarterback PEYTON MANNING, Indy tallied the most points of any club this year in its 45-31 donnybrook victory over Green Bay.  Manning threw for the most yards (393) and tied for the most touchdowns (5, with no interceptions) this year.

Matchup to watch: those two ol’ Florida high school chums – RBs EDGERRIN JAMES of the Colts (Immokalee High) and FRED TAYLOR of the Jaguars (Glades Central High, Belle Glade).  “Ever since we left high school, we’ve kept in touch,” says James.  “We like to go out and handle our business.  We just go out to make plays.”

NFL FACTOID

SINGULAR GAME: The Green Bay-Indianapolis game last Sunday was unique.  Never before in NFL history has there been a game in which the quarterbacks (BRETT FAVRE and PEYTON MANNING) each threw for 350 yards, at least four touchdowns and no interceptions.

  • ATLANTA FALCONS (3-0) AT CAROLINA PANTHERS (1-1):  Both teams have the offensive stars to highlight this division matchup, but the defenses could be the deciding factor.

It’s Mr. Excitement, Falcons quarterback MICHAEL VICK, against Mr. Resourceful, Panthers Super Bowl quarterback JAKE DELHOMME.  And it’s Atlanta running back WARRICK DUNN – tied for the league lead in rushing TDs with four – against DE SHAUN FOSTER, who in Week 2 before the Panthers’ bye ran for the most yards (174) in the NFC this year.

Fine, say the stout defenses, but maybe we’ll decide who wins.  Carolina trots out an NFC Championship crew featuring people like JULIUS PEPPERS, KRIS JENKINS and DAN MORGAN.  “Individually, the Panthers’ front seven is so talented that even if they screw up, it comes out looking good,” says Green Bay guard MIKE WAHLE.

Atlanta – with the lowest-ranked defense in the league last year -- has switched to a 4-3 under new head coach JIM MORA, San Francisco’s former defensive coordinator.  The Falcs are giving up only 13.0 points a game, less than half of what they surrendered in 2003 (26.4), and have cut their average yards allowed to 293.0 from 381.8 last year.  “Our goal is not to go from 32nd to 31st,” says defensive end PATRICK KERNEY, who had a career-best three sacks last week against Arizona.  “We need to play even better defense to be the team we need to be.”

  • PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (3-0) AT CHICAGO BEARS (1-2):  It’s a “home game” for Donovan.

Eagles quarterback DONOVAN MC NABB – the only passer in the league with as many as eight touchdowns and no interceptions – grew up in the Chicago suburb of Dolton and attended Mount Carmel High School, which has sent many players to the NFL.  He led the school to a city championship at Soldier Field, where he plays Sunday.  “We grew up Bears fans,” says McNabb.  “Some converted to Philadelphia, but you can’t expect them all to.”

McNabb’s counterpart Sunday – JONATHAN QUINN -- will be starting his fourth game in a seven-year NFL career.  Signed by the Bears this year after stints with Jacksonville and Kansas City, the 6-6, 240-pound Quinn replaces starter REX GROSSMAN, out for the year with a torn ACL.  In the spring of 2001, Quinn led the NFL Europe League’s Berlin Thunder to the World Bowl IX title.  “He brings a competitive spirit,” says Bears offensive coordinator TERRY SHEA, who coached Quinn with Kansas City.  “He’s a very competitive guy.”

The Bears, whose two losses come by a total of nine points, will rely upon the NFC’s leading rusher THOMAS JONES (329 yards, four TDs) to prevent the Eagles from ganging up on new starter Quinn.  Philly’s three wins come by an average of 14 points.

  • NEW YORK GIANTS (2-1) at GREEN BAY PACKERS (1-2):  BRETT FAVRE against his most successful understudy.

Eleven quarterbacks have backed up the three-time NFL MVP Favre and gone on to start for other teams.  But only one – the Giants’ KURT WARNER – has won a Super Bowl (XXXIV) and NFL MVP Awards (1999, 2001).

Warner played under Favre in the Packers’ 1994 training camp.  “If I would have made the team, I would still be on the bench,” he says.  “They have one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game.”

Of course, Favre is off to his usual stellar season, throwing last Sunday for four TDs, the 17th time he has done that.  Warner, new to the Giants this year after six seasons with St. Louis, has yet to throw an interception.

Key matchup: Two of the top five NFC RBs square off.  Green Bay’s AHMAN GREEN (No. 2, 314 yards), who has the most carries in the conference – 74…and New York’s TIKI BARBER (No. 4, 273), who ties Philadelphia’s BRYANT WESTBROOK for the NFC’s top yards-per-carry average (5.5).

  • KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (0-3) at BALTIMORE RAVENS (2-1) (Monday, ABC, 9:00 PM ET):  Jamal vs. Priest.

Together again in Baltimore, the two running backs who both wear No. 31 and arguably had the best rushing seasons of 2003, square off on Monday night.

The Ravens’ JAMAL LEWIS was a rookie in the Chiefs’ PRIEST HOLMES’ last year in Baltimore (2000).  In 2003, they seemed to play “can you top this.”  Lewis produced the second-greatest rushing season in history (2,066 yards behind ERIC DICKERSON’s 2,105 in 1984), and the best single-game rushing total – 295 yards.  Holmes kept up with his former teammate, rushing for 27 touchdowns, which set the season record for total TDs and most rushing scores.  That rushing TD total topped the team totals in the category of every NFL club.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs will go against a Ravens team that has won seven in a row at home.  But the 0-3 Chiefs should not despair.  Since 1990, three teams (1992 San Diego, 0-4; 1995 Detroit, 0-3; and 1998 Buffalo, 0-3) have begun the season with at least 0-3 records and made the playoffs.
