PATS GO FOR CONSECUTIVE-WIN RECORD;

KEY EARLY-SEASON DIVISION MATCHUPS ON TAP

There are win-streaks.  Then there are win-streaks.  Both kinds are on the line this week.

First, the win-streak.  The New England Patriots can make history this Sunday if they defeat the visiting Miami Dolphins.  A victory would be New England’s 19th in a row, counting regular season and playoffs.  No team has won that many consecutively in those categories.  The Patriots tied five other teams last week with their 18th such victory.  They last lost over a year ago, on September 28 to the Washington Redskins 20-17.

(The NFL’s regular-season consecutive-victory streak is 17, held by the 1933-34 Chicago Bears.  The Patriots, heading into Week 5 with 15 such wins, can tie three teams for second place in the regular-season category – the 1941-42 Chicago Bears, and the 1971-73 and 1983-84 Miami Dolphins).

Certainly fitting the Patriots’ blue-collar image is that in its 18 wins in a row, it has the lowest average margin of victory of the six clubs to win 18 successively.  All the others have a close to/more than two-touchdown margin during their streaks:

“It is pretty impressive,” says Patriots defensive end RICHARD SEYMOUR (who helped keep the streak alive last Sunday with a 68-yard fumble-recovery TD) of the string.  “We have an attitude that we won’t be denied.”

A good trait to have, say the NFL’s other win-streak clubs.  And although they can’t match the Patriots in volume, their 2004 streaks are no less vital to them.

Beginning the second quarter of the season, four teams in addition to the 3-0 Patriots are undefeated – the 4-0 Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles, and the 3-0 New York Jets and Seattle Seahawks.

But, remember, in the NFL, nothing is certain.  Last year at this time, the Minnesota Vikings were 4-0 and didn’t make the playoffs.  On the other side of the coin, since 1990, 18 teams that began a season at best at 1-3 did make the playoffs, including the 0-4 San Diego Chargers of 1992 who won the AFC West.

“All games are important,” says Jets head coach HERMAN EDWARDS.  “We make a big issue of September.  But when September is over, then we make a big issue of October.”  Some of the “big issues” of Week 5:

  • DETROIT LIONS (2-1) at ATLANTA FALCONS (4-0):  First meeting of two of the three highest-drafted quarterbacks of 2001-02 – Falcons’ MICHAEL VICK (No. 1 overall, 2001) and Lions’ JOEY HARRINGTON (No. 3, 2002 behind DAVID CARR, No. 1).

The Falcons at 4-0 match the best start in franchise history (1986).  The Lions, coming off a bye, match their best
start since 2000.  Each club will have to contend with a specialty of the other.

NFL FACTOID

CLASSIC CHARGERS:  Apropos for the week after LA DAINIAN TOMLINSON broke the team’s career rushing record of PAUL LOWE (1960-68), the San Diego Chargers will wear their classic powder blue jerseys (1960-73) this week when they host Jacksonville.

Detroit, surrendering a hair below 100 rush yards a game (99.7), confronts not only the unpredictable Vick, the NFC’s 12th-ranked rusher, but WARRICK DUNN, tied for second in the league in rushing touchdowns with five.

The revamped Falcons defense (No. 32 last year, No. 10 in ’04) faces the league’s leading rookie in receiving yards, circus-catch ROY WILLIAMS (277), who has four TD catches.

Lions head coach STEVE MARIUCCI hired new Falcons coach JIM MORA as his DB coach in Mariucci’s first year as the San Francisco 49ers’ head coach in 1997.  “He’s very confident and very ready,” says Mariucci.

Key matchup:  Falcons LDE PATRICK KERNEY, the NFL sack leader (7.0), against Lions RT STOCKAR MC DOUGLE.

  • NEW YORK GIANTS (3-1) at DALLAS COWBOYS (2-1):  Always a good division matchup, but this year it’s heightened even more due to the head coaches involved.

It will be the first meeting as new Giants coach for TOM COUGHLIN with BILL PARCELLS, the former Giants head coach for whom he was wide receivers coach with the team from 1988-90, helping the club to its Super Bowl XXV title.

And it’s a changed Giants team the ’Boys, who defeated them twice last season (and in 10 of the last 13 at Texas Stadium), will see.  The Giants were tied last year for the worst takeaway/giveaway margin in the league with a minus-16.  This season, they lead the NFL with a plus-10.

It will be the Cowboys’ No. 2 NFL air game, led by New York-born quarterback VINNY TESTAVERDE, against the Giants’ ground attack, led by the league’s second leading rusher, TIKI BARBER (455 yards).

  • CLEVELAND BROWNS (2-2) at PITTSBURGH STEELERS (3-1):  Mr. Miami of Ohio faces his home-state team.

That would be Steelers’ first-round rookie BEN ROETHLISBERGER, the first Pittsburgh quarterback to win his first two starts since MIKE KRUCZEK won nine in a row while replacing an injured TERRY BRADSHAW in 1976.

It will be the rookie’s first experience with one of the NFL’s greatest rivalries, one that pits cities separated by only 133 miles of interstate.  In the past two seasons, four of the five games between the division rivals (including a 2002 Wild Card) have been decided by seven points or less (including three by three points).

The key matchup in the game could come between Steelers wide receiver HINES WARD – who leads the AFC in catches (28) and receiving yards (394) – against corners DAYLON MC CUTCHEON and ANTHONY HENRY.

  • ST. LOUIS RAMS (2-2) at SEATTLE SEAHAWKS (3-0):  A more conservative Rams going against the league’s top defense?

We’ll see.  These are the “fling-it-and-have-fun” Rams after all.  But last week against San Francisco, they balanced things with a running attack (MARSHALL FAULK, 121 yards), calling 19 running plays and 18 passes in building a 24-0 first-half lead.  “I loved that game plan,” said tackle ORLANDO PACE.

That’s fine.  But St. Louis faces an NFC West rival that leads the league in defense and has surrendered the fewest points this season, 13, with no opponent reaching double digits.  Seattle is second only to the Giants in the NFC in takeaways/giveaways with a plus-7.  And they’ve won 10 in a row at home going back to 2002.

A key to the Seahawks’ even tougher defense this year has been the addition of right defensive end GRANT WISTROM, who came from the Rams this offseason.  Book-ended with CHIKE OKEAFOR, he has taken Seattle’s defense to “the next level,” says head coach MIKE HOLMGREN.  His 2.5 sacks are second on the club.

  • TENNESSEE TITANS (1-3) at GREEN BAY PACKERS (1-3) (Monday, ABC, 9:00 PM ET):  Two perfect examples of 1-3 teams who definitely have the potential to make the playoffs.

“This team is not going to fall apart,” says Titans head coach JEFF FISHER, in effect speaking for both clubs.

Tennessee brings a 43-31 road record under Fisher into a recent 6-6 Lambeau Field mark for the Pack.  Both quarterbacks – Green Bay’s BRETT FAVRE and Tennessee’s STEVE MC NAIR -- return from injuries.

If the teams decide to pound it, they have two Big 12 running backs who want to get back to their 100-yard ways.  Tennessee’s CHRIS BROWN (Colorado) was held to 55 yards last week by San Diego after three 100-yard efforts.  Green Bay’s AHMAN GREEN (Nebraska) began the year with two 100-yard games but was limited to 67 and 58 in the last two.  This summer in a preseason game, Brown broke a 73-yarder against the Packers.
